Game Story

Portland, ME — The Worcester Railers were shutout 1-0 on Sunday afternoon by the Maine Mariners at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine.

This is likely the shortest game recap posted here in a while. Ken Appleby had a stellar afternoon, stopping all but one of Maine’s 38 shots in the game. Nick Fea had his point streak halted after six games (2-4-6). Andrei Bakanov and Trevor Cosgrove had Railers-high four shots on goal during the game. Fedor Gordeev scored the lone goal of the game, which came on the power play during the second period. An otherwise easy game for the Railers to win, had any of their skaters shown up to the game.

Fedor Gordeev scored with three seconds left on a Billy Jerry penalty at 14:39 in the second period.

It was a cat-and-mouse game for the Mariners, who led in shots, scoring opportunities, and ambition Sunday afternoon. The Mariners failed to score on a few open-net opportunities early on in the game, but the Railers failed when it really mattered late in the third period as Myles McGurty missed a wide-open net following a few rebounds. It took all six skaters to get in front of the net as Ken Appleby was pulled in an attempt to keep it a one-goal game.

The three stars of Sunday’s game were:

  1. François Brassard (Maine) – win, shutout, 27 saves
  2. Ken Appleby (Worcester) – 37 saves,
  3. Fedor Gordeev (Maine) – 1 goal

The Trois-Rivieres Lions had the edge over the Reading Royals in the only other north division match-up of Sunday. The Railers drop to a record of 28-26-3-0 with 59 points, not far ahead of the Adirondack Thunder who have 50 with four games in hand.

The Railers return to Worcester where they’ll host the Adirondack Thunder on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
