Game Story

Portland, ME — The Worcester Railers traveled up to Portland, Maine to wrap up a 3-in-3 weekend with an afternoon match-up on a snowy Sunday afternoon, falling 4-2 after a pair of goals in the closing minute.

John Muse made 25 saves in his fourth appearance as a Railer, which was his first ECHL regulation loss since February 2, 2019. Brad Arvantis picked up his second win against Worcester this season with 34 saves, his first came on November 19, where he made 34 saves in Maine’s 3-2 victory. Joey Cipollone and Anthony Callin both scored for Worcester, each was their fifth goal of the season. Alex Kile had two goals for Maine, sandwiched by a goal in the first period by Owen Pederson and an empty net goal by Curtis Hall. It was the second game in a row that the Railers had three straight goals in the closing minutes of a period.

Owen Pederson scored the lone goal of the first period to give Maine a 1-0 lead. Pederson beat John Muse on a backhanded tip over his glove. With no penalties called in the first period, Maine held a goal lead heading into the second period.

Joey Cipollone leveled the score at 5:02 during the second period, delivering a shot that bounced over Brad Arvantis’s pads as he rushed into the Maine zone alongside Riley Piercey. Six minutes later, Anthony Callin secured a 2-1 lead for Worcester during a power play, taking advantage of Owen Pederson’s penalty. Callin executed a snipe over Arvantis’s shoulder from between the circles, sealing the scoring for the second period with 10 seconds remaining on the power play.

Entering the third period, the Railers maintained their goal advantage and had a prime opportunity to further extend their lead when Maine incurred three penalties in the middle of the third. Despite having four shots and an extended 5-on-3 advantage, Worcester couldn’t capitalize on these power plays. Brendan Robbins received a hooking penalty at 17:03, and a shot from Alex Kile six seconds into the power play leveled the score at 2-2. With just 27 seconds remaining in the third, Alex Kile scored again with a shot from the blue line, securing a 3-2 lead for Maine. John Muse was pulled for the extra attacker with 15 seconds left, but unlike many games this season, the Railers were unsuccessful in equalizing late. Curtis Hall sealed the victory for Maine with an empty-net goal on a long shot across the ice as the clock expired, resulting in a 4-2 win for Maine.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Alex Kile (Maine) – 2 goals
  2. Brad Arvantis (Maine) – 34 saves, win, 0.944 SV%
  3. Owen Pederson (Maine) – 1 goal

Elsewhere in the North Division, the Newfoundland Growlers secured a 6-2 victory earlier in the afternoon against Utah. The Adirondack Thunder triumphed over the Trois-Rivieres Lions with a score of 5-3 in Glens Falls. The Indy Fuel shut out the Norfolk Admirals with a 4-0 score, and the game saw a total of 103 penalty minutes, primarily due to a couple of misconducts around the 11-minute mark in the third period. As the week’s action concludes, the Railers are still tied with Norfolk for fourth place. On Friday, four of the seven teams will be in action, and Newfoundland will host Adirondack on Wednesday.

Next on the calendar for Worcester, they’ll host the Norfolk Admirals in a 3-in-3 weekend starting on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
