Portland, ME – The Worcester Railers picked up their second win of the weekend, picking up four points of the weekend with a 5-2 victory over the Maine Mariners on Sunday afternoon.

Michael Bullion earned his eighth win of the season, stopping 23 shots on the afternoon. Ryan Bischel was the goaltender for Maine, stopping 35 of 39 shots by Worcester. Matt Ustaski, Connor Welsh, Cole Donhauser, Mark Cheremeta, and Matias Rajaniemi each scored for Worcester. Jordan Kaplan had a pair of assists, while Kolby Johnson, Griffin Luce, and Anthony Callin also contributed assists.Wyllum Deveaux and Lynden McCallum had the tallies for Maine.

Matt Ustaski opened the scoring for Worcester at 5:23, burying a one-timer off a feed from Jordan Kaplan, who recorded his first of two assists. Maine answered at 15:17 when Wyllum Deveaux capitalized on a Railers’ turnover to tie it up. Despite the tied score, Worcester controlled the first period, outshooting Maine 20-10.

The only goal of the second period came at 16:48 when Railers defenseman Connor Welsh fired a shot from the left point to reclaim the lead. Worcester ran into penalty trouble late in the period, as Griffin Loughran was ejected at 17:28 for boarding Michael Underwood, putting Maine on a 5-minute power play, which carried over the third. Maine nearly capitalized with a shorthanded breakaway attempt from Christian Sarlo at 7:35. Railers outshot Maine again in the second period 12-8.

Seconds after Loughran’s penalty expired, Lynden McCallum scooped up a rebound from a Tristan Thompson point shot to tie the game at two just 2:33 into the third. Worcester then found themselves shorthanded again at 5:01, but Cole Donhauser turned the tide, stripping Brooklyn Kalmikov and scoring on a shorthanded breakaway to regain the lead. Cheremeta provided insurance at 15:52, and Rajaniemi sealed the win with an empty-netter, securing the 5-2 victory.

Elsewhere in the North Division, the Adirondack Thunder beat the Reading Royals 6-2.As of this writing, the Wheeling Nailers are up 1-0 over the Toledo Walleye in the second period.

The Railers return to Worcester, where they’ll host the Atlanta Gladiators for the first of three matchups this week, starting with a 7:05 p.m. puck drop on Wednesday.
