Game Story

Greenville, SC — Ending their South Carolina road trip the Worcester Railers returned to the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville for their last game of the weekend.

Goaltenders were swapped once again with Mitch Gillam starting the game in net. He made 28 saves on 30 shots. Bo Brauer made his debut and Alex Adams saw action for the first time since December 22 as Alex Vanier and Yanick Turcotte were serving games on their suspensions. Tyler Barnes (11th), Bo Brauer (1st), Barry Almeida (10th) scored for Worcester.

Tyler Barnes scored on the power play for the game’s only goal of the first period. Barnes deflected a shot from Mike Cornell a minute and 27 seconds into the game’s first power play. Greenville and Worcester both had chances on the power play with Worcester finding the net through the first twenty minutes. Shots were 14-7 Worcester heading into the second period.

Both teams had penalties in the opening ten minutes of the second periods with both penalties being killed off. Bo Brauer scored his first professional goal on a shot to the far corner of the net from the right side of goaltender Chris Nell to give the Railers an insurance goal at 12:48 in the second period. Barry Almeida extended the Railers to three goals with 48.8 seconds remaining in the second period. His goal which was scored from the right circle is his tenth of the season and his first goal in eleven games (December 12, 2018). Things were easy going for the Railers with two periods in the books with shots (32-13) and goals (3-0) working in their favor.

Ivan Kosorenkov left the game after his kneeing penalty and did not return due to an apparent injury. According to the game call, he was seen in the crowd with Yanick Turcotte and Alex Vanier during the third period.

Brendan Harms killed Mitch Gillam’s hopes of a shutout with a goal 52 seconds into the third period. Harms snuck the puck past Gillam after a quick lap behind Gillam’s net and slid it in on the right side. Garret Milan scored his second of the season and his second goal against Worcester this weekend with the puck going between the glove of leg pad of Mitch Gillam and into the net. Railers managed to hold on as Greenville held pressure with 17 shots in the period with the Railers pick up their only win of the road trip. Railers won 3-2 with shots being 41-30 in their favor.

Worcester Railers (14-16-3-2) are now tied with the Brampton Beast for sixth place. They won’t go home empty-handed as this road trip concluded Sunday.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. Barry Almeida (Worcester) – 1 goal
  2. Garrett Milan (Greenville) – 1 goal
  3. Adam Larkin (Greenville) – 2 assists

If you try sometimes you might find you get what you need: The Railers will return to Worcester with a connecting flight in Atlanta and will play the first of four consecutive home games next weekend. The team will be hosting some big giveaways with a Mitch Gillam bobblehead on January 12 and a Red Sox inspired jersey to benefit Be Like Brit on January 13.

Notes

  • Railers Injuries: Malcolm Gould, Kyle McKenzie, David Quenneville
  • Railers Scratches: Yanick Turcotte (suspended), Alex Vanier (suspended)
  • Both Yanick Turcotte and Alex Vanier were suspended prior to Sunday’s game based on their actions during the brawl towards the end of Saturday’s game.
    • Turcotte was suspended indefinitely and fined for continuing the altercation at the Greenville Bench after the brawl was initially broken up in the Railers’ zone. Turcotte’s suspension will be reviewed by the league this week as he also forcibly moved a linesman on the play during the altercation. There is a possibility of being suspended a few more games because of that.
    • Alex Vanier was suspended and fined for his game misconduct for unsportsmanlike conduct and was suspended for just one game.
