Game Story
Brampton, ON – Continuing their first series of road games of the 2019-20 season, the Worcester Railers traveled above the Canadian border for the first of two games against the Brampton Beast this weekend.
Jordan Samuels-Thomas and Cody Payne both scored for Worcester, both on the power play. Evan Buitenhuis 19 saves in his second start of the season. Brampton’s Brenden Miller had a Gordie Howe Hat Trick with a goal, assist, and fight. Both teams were 2-for-6 on the power play.
The game was a lot quieter in comparison to the Railers’ first four games of the season. Railers outshot the Beast 12-9 in the first, but the Beast had possession of the puck for the bulk of that period. Worcester’s perfect penalty kill came to an end with Brampton’s Christopher Clapperton netting a goal with a two-man advantage at 17:13. JD Dudek (Broken Stick minor) and Kyle McKenzie (Holding minor) were both in the box, the only two penalties called in the frame.
Justin Murray dropped the gloves with Brendan Miller at 6:32 in the second. No clear winner in that fight, though Miller had the majority of punches, Miller didn’t seem to be affected by them by the time the linesmen broke it up. Miller was given an extra two for instigating the fight.
Jordan Samuels-Thomas had a nice snipe on the crossbar at 14:02 in the second that landed in the net behind Joey Daccord to get Worcester on the board. Christopher Clapperton would score 34 seconds later for his second of the night. Brendon Miller netted Brampton’s third goal at 16:05. Hope was kept alive as Cody Payne scored on a set-up from Barry Almeida at the crease with 1:09 left in the second to bring Worcester within one goal.
With 20 seconds remaining on a Cody Payne penalty, Brampton’s Daniel Leavens scored an insurance goal at 12:33 in the third. Things would fall apart in the closing minutes with Mike Cornell arguing against an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at 18:13, earning him the early shower with a game misconduct. At this point, Evan Buitenhuis was pulled for the extra attacker despite trailing by two points, which became three points with David Pacan sealing things up with an empty-net goal with 22 seconds left on the clock.
The Three Stars of the Game were:
- Christopher Clapperton (Brampton) – 2 goals, 1 assist
- Brenden Miller (Brampton) – 1 goal, 1 assist, 1 fight
- Nic Pierog (Worcester) – 6 shots, -1
The Railers wrap things up tomorrow for Game 2 against the Beast at 2 PM.

Notes
- Railers Scratches: Bo Brauer, Ivan Chukarov, Chris Rygus, Henrik Samuelsson, Matt Schmalz.
- Saturday’s game was one of the longer games in recent memory (or so it felt), the game had a late start time of 7:15 due to a ceremonial puck drop by Brampton’s new ownership group. Intermissions were also longer than their usual 18 minutes due to on-ice entertainment and Brampton neglecting to start the clock after the teams left the ice. The game length on the scoresheet was listed at 2:31.
- If you’re like this writer and track the ECHL transactions, you’ll be happy to know the league has brought back the transactions page at ECHL.com/Transactions. With that being said the league has also updated their mobile apps and it now takes longer to access that page from the app.
- Jakub Skarek made his AHL debut for the Sound Tigers on the road against the Wolf Pack on Saturday, making 30 saves on 34 shots. While he had a solid night in net, the rest of the Sound Tigers had just one goal on 17 shots in their fifth straight loss (0-4-0-1).
- With an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and a game misconduct, Mike Cornell becomes the second Railer to tally 300 penalty minutes, now at 311. Yanick Turcotte was the first and currently has 374.
