Game Story
Brampton, ON — The Worcester Railers and the Brampton Beast met north of the border for the first of two matches this week on Sunday. Railers will face the Beast eight times throughout the 2018-19 season.
Mitch Gillam was the starter for Worcester after serving as the backup goalie on Friday. Gillam was solid in net in his return, making 28 saves on 30 shots. Worcester Hockey Alum Daniel Ciampini dressed for the Beast. Railers were 0-For-4 on the Power Play, and had one penalty kill in Sunday’s match up. David Pacan and Boston Leier scored the game’s only goals for Brampton.
The teams played a pretty even opening twenty minutes with a ton of back and forth action. The Railers had the lone power play as Brampton got called for having too many men on the ice, with it being unsuccessful and generating two shots on goal. Mike Cornell picked up his third fighting major of the season against Boston Leier in the closing 1:45 of the period. The game remained scoreless with Brampton outshooting Worcester as the opening frame came to an end.
Back and forth action continued into the second period as teams chased the game’s first goal. Worcester had two more unsuccessful opportunities on the power play and some 4-on-4 action with Connor Doherty and Macoy Erkamps heading off for roughing penalties. Barry Almeida left the game midway through the period with an injury after taking a high-stick to the mouth, but returned in the closing minutes of the period. Action remained scoreless after forty minutes with Worcester coming closer to close the shot gap with shots being 21-19.
Brampton broke the tie with a 2-on-1 with a pass across the ice and a shot from the left circle, racing past the pads of Mitch Gillam. The lead was extended to two with Boston Leier with a one-timer from ten feet in front of the Railers net. Beast had their only power play of the day with David Quenneville being called off for roughing after the second goal. Tyler Mueller scored his first professional goal with 61 seconds remaining in the period with an extra attacker. All hope of a late comeback was put to rest as David Pacan scored on the empty net with forty seconds left in the game.
Railers are now 6-10-2-0 with the 2-0 loss to Brampton on Sunday.
The Three Stars of the Game were:
- David Pacan (Brampton) – 1 goal, 1 assist
- Étienne Marcou (Brampton) – 24 saves, 1 GAA
- Boston Leier (Brampton) – 1 goal, fight
Back at it Again: Railers and Beast will meet again on Tuesday for game two in morning matinee. The Beast will be holding their own “school day game” with an early start time of 11 am.

Notes
- Railers Injuries: Tommy Kelley, Malcolm Gould, Yanick Turcotte
- Railers Scratches: Alex Vanier
- Railers wore their away whites while the Beast wore Harry Potter themed specialty jerseys.
- Ryan Hitchcock got the recall to Bridgeport after Friday’s game against Manchester. Hitchcock was a healthy scratch for Bridgeport on Saturday and made the lineup on Sunday. He has two points in three games for Worcester.
- Ivan Kosorenkov made his AHL debut on Saturday in the San Jose Barracuda’s 4-3 Shootout loss to the Colorado Eagles. He made the box score with a single shot on goal during that game. Kosorenkov has five points in eight games for Worcester.
- Yanick Turcotte made the trip with the team to Brampton. As he is still recovering from an injury he did not play on Sunday but there’s a chance he could return for Tuesday’s game. As mentioned on the pre-game show, he is not 100 percent yet.
- Connor Doherty saw some time playing as both a forward and a defenseman in Sunday’s game as the Railers currently have nine healthy forwards on the active roster. Yanick Turcotte looks to be the tenth forward when the time comes for him to return, pending any recalls, assignments, or injuries.
