Game Story

Brampton, ON — The Worcester Railers made their first Canadian trip of the New Year this week and faced the Brampton Beast in the Beast’s second school day game of the season on Wednesday.

After some travel issues to due inclement weather in Ontario, the Railers were stuck at the airport for a majority of Tuesday with flight delay after delay. The team finally made their flight late on Tuesday night before finally making it to Brampton.

The delays didn’t help the fact the team had to get up early the next day for a school day game. One can imagine how difficult it could be to get ready for a game after getting just a few hours of sleep to play in an arena full of energized school kids. As mentioned in just about every school day recap, the arenas have never been louder. However, these factors didn’t appear to have any impact on the Railers’ play.

Mitch Gillam got the start for Worcester. Ivan Kosorenkov (7th), Tyler Barnes (13th & 14th), Ryan MacKinnon (4th) scored for Worcester. Railers had just one power play on the day which resulted in their first of four goals. Tyler Barnes and Ryan Hitchcock had multi-point games.

The Beast had an early 5-on-3 advantage with Tommy Panico sitting for two on a questionable holding penalty at 3:35 and Matt Gaudreau sitting a little less than a minute later for tripping. James Henry was able to capitalize seconds before the first penalty was killed off to put the Beast on the board. Railers were quick to bounce back with a power play of their own as Daniel Ciampini sat for a tripping penalty at 6:10 and Ivan Kosorenkov scored on it some 19 seconds later. Beast regained the lead on a Jackson Leef shot from deep in the left circle at 14:47. Tyler Barnes scored his thirteenth of the season from the right circle at 16:51, then picking up an assist on Ryan MacKinnon’s goal with 46 seconds remaining in the period. Railers had their first lead of the game heading into the second period at 3-2, shots were 15-10, also led by Worcester.

Tyler Barnes would continue to dominate with a shot between the circles for his second of the game at 5:04. Woo Hockey Alum Daniel Ciampini answered back with a tap-in on an open net, five minutes and ten seconds later. Matt Gaudreau sat for another questionable call for interference at 10:45 after several missed calls for infractions by Beast skaters on him. Barry Almeida sat for the remainder of the period and then some on a high-sticking call at 16:11, drawn on David Pacan who left for the locker room for repairs. Railers continued to lead after two periods, shots 25-17 Worcester.

It was smooth sailing for the Railers for a majority of the third period. Railers held the lead up until the Beast pulled Jake Patterson for the extra attacker and David Vallorani scoring the tying goal with 36 seconds remaining in regulation.

With the game undecided in regulation the game headed to overtime and then the shootout. There was plenty of back-and-forth action in overtime including a few 2-on-1 and 2-on-None chances for Brampton. Kosorenkov was the only one to score in the first round of the shootout, then Nathan Todd scored for Brampton in the second and eventually Artur Tianulin put the game away in the third round.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. Artur Tianulin (Brampton) – shootout game winner
  2. Tyler Barnes (Worcester) – 2 goals, assist
  3. David Vallorani (Brampton) – 1 goal

Worcester Railers (19-18-3-3, 44 pts) take sixth place in the North Division with Maine trailing behind with 43 points. Both of those teams play tonight so the division rankings could change again once those games are completed.

The Railers won’t stay in Ontario long as they are scheduled to leave for Newfoundland late in the night and arrive at some point in the morning. They’ll face the Growlers on Friday and Sunday, with the puck dropping at 5:30 PM both nights.
