Game Story

Brampton, ON — The Worcester Railers were back in action on Wednesday. Making a quick road trip to the CAA Centre in Brampton, Ontario this week for their final road game above the border in 2018.

Mitch Gillam got the start with Evan Buitenhuis sitting on the bench as the backup after a great performance in Saturday’s shootout loss to Maine. Dylan Willick (5th), Nick Sorkin (5th), and Ryan MacKinnon (2nd) scored for Worcester. Both teams had scored on the power play during the second period. Gillam made a record 54 saves and earned the win in his return to the net.

Brampton had the first advantage as Woody Hudson earned a tripping penalty with his stick getting caught in the skate of Matt Petgrave. Luckily for Worcester, the Beast were unable to generate a good shot on goal with the passing game in the Railers zone. Dylan Willick got the ball rolling for Worcester with a tap-in at the crease with the set-up by Yanick Turcotte. Austin Block was also credited with an assist on the goal, bringing all three forward’s cold-streaks to an end. Shots were 18-6 with the Railers getting the only point through twenty minutes of action.

Railers had the early two-man advantage with Jonathan Racine (2:26) and Brandon Marino (2:52) receiving penalties within 26 seconds of each other in the second minute of the period. Nick Sorkin caught a one-timer from Tyler Barnes at the front of the net to extend their lead to two at 3:13. Connor Doherty got called to the box in a tussle with Woo Hockey Alum Daniel Ciampini at 18:05 in the period. Erik Bradford shot the puck above the glove of Mitch Gillam with 1:11 left in the period to bring the game to within one. The score was 2-1 Worcester and shots were 38-20 Brampton heading into the final frame.

Daniel Ciampini tied it up at 10:47 while Connor Doherty (interference) and David Pacan (Cross-Checking) were in the box, with a shot between the circles in front of Mitch Gillam. Ryan MacKinnon gave the Railers the lead once again on a rare four-on-three advantage. MacKinnon caught a one-timer from Matty Gaudreau in front of Beast goaltender Jake Paterson for his second goal of the season.

Railers (13-13-3-1) are back in fifth place in a tie with the Manchester Monarchs with 28 points.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. Mitch Gillam (Worcester) – 54 saves, win
  2. Ryan MacKinnon (Worcester) – game-winning goal
  3. Daniel Ciampini (Brampton) – 1 goal, +1

Notes

  • Railers Injuries: Malcolm Gould, Tommy Kelley, Kyle McKenzie, David Quenneville, Alex Vanier
  • Railers Scratches: Ivan Kosorenkov
  • Tyler Barnes, Dylan Willick, Austin Block, and Yanick Turcotte all had points, thus breaking their cold streaks during Wednesday’s game. Cold streaks are what we’ll consider three or more straight games played without a point which all four players had. Turcotte had the longest of the four with ten games without a point.
  • Ivan Kosorenkov was a healthy scratch during Wednesday’s game as he is still dealing with immigration issues with Canada.
  • As reported in the pre-game show, Tommy Kelley is now skating in a regular jersey during team practices. This is a sign he is cleared for full contact and meaning that he’ll return to playing in games very soon.
  • Alex Vanier was scratched with what was described as a minor injury.
  • David Quenneville was scratched on Wednesday due to an injury sustained during Saturday’s game after taking a puck to the face in the second period of that game.
  • Brampton’s 20 shots on goal during the second period are the most the Railers have allowed in the middle frame for the franchise. With that being said the 19 saves by Mitch Gillam are the most made is a high for the second period. The Railers went on to allow 56 shots on goal in total for the game, which is also a franchise high.
  • Since this will never be mentioned enough, the Railers Booster Club will be holding another 50/50 raffle on Friday to benefit the Ava Roy Fund during Friday’s game. The Booster Club has already raised over $2,000 towards the fund and the Railers HC Foundation will be donating $5,000. The Junior Railers have been raising funds at the Worcester Ice Center that will be donated to the fund as well.
