Game Story

Allen, TX – The Worcester Railers secured a series sweep on Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over the Allen Americans at the Credit Union of Texas Event Center.

Hugo Ollas secured his eighth win of the season—and his sixth with the Railers—by stopping 35 of Allen’s 36 shots. This win marked his fourth straight win. Dylan Wells was back in net for Allen on Sunday, recording 31 saves, just one short of matching his performance from Saturday night. Worcester had goals from Jordan Kaplan, Tyler Kobryn, and Lincoln Hatten, while Bayden Watts netted the only goal for Allen. Kaplan extended his point streak to five games and has now scored in each of his last three outings.

Much like Friday night’s game, the Railers set the pace early with three goals in the first period. Jordan Kaplan opened the scoring at 11:21, capitalizing on an awkward pass from Cole Donhauser that slipped through Dylan Wells’ pads. Tyler Kobryn followed up with a goal on his own rebound for the second goal at 15:06. The third goal was credited to Lincoln Hatten, though the FloSports feed—providing a clearer view than the tweeted video of the goal—suggests it was JD Dudek’s shot that went through Hatten’s legs. A late roughing penalty on Anthony Callin carried into the second period but was quickly killed off. The Railers maintained their three-goal advantage, outshooting Allen 16-4 in the opening frame.

With Callin’s penalty killed off, the Railers found themselves shorthanded again when both teams found themselves pushing, pulling, and punching each other. Benjamin Lindberg and former Railer Colin Adams had matching penalties for roughing, and Ryan Dickinson later joined them after referee Sam Heidemann missed Brayden Guy punching Dickinson as Jacobs held him by his collar. All penalties were successfully killed off, including a brief 5-on-3 when JD Dudek went to the box for cross-checking. However, Kabore Dunn was sent off for Delay of Game at 10:37, leading to Brayden Watts scoring on a rebound to put the Americans on the board. By the end of the second period, Worcester led in shots 26-21, though Allen outshot them 17-10 in that period.

The Railers couldn’t capitalize on a 5-on-3 power play after Kamerin Nault was penalized at 3:04, followed by Spencer Asuchak, who was sent to the box for tackling Anthony Callin moments after a face-off. Despite firing three shots during the advantage, they came up empty. Mason Klee then served a penalty, leading to the Railers’ fifth penalty kill, which they successfully completed at 13:52. Allen pulled goaltender Dylan Wells at 18:14 and again at 19:08, but the Railers couldn’t add to their lead. Tyler Kobryn had a close chance with a far shot from between the faceoff circles with eight seconds remaining. The Railers secured the series sweep with the 3-1 victory, despite being outshot 37-34, including a 16-8 shot deficit in the third period.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. Hugo Ollas (Worcester) – win, 36 saves, 0.973 SV%
  2. Jordan Kaplan – (Worcester) – 1 goal
  3. Tyler Kobryn – (Worcester) – 1 goal

Elsewhere in the North Division… The Trois-Rivieres Lions defeated the Adirondack Thunder 6-2 in Glens Falls, powered by a hat trick from Tyler Hylland and four power-play goals. The Greenville Swamp Rabbits beat the Wheeling Nailers with a 5-2 victory in Greenville. Wheeling will face Greenville again on Monday, while Reading travels to Kalamazoo for a Wednesday night matchup. Railers have an eight-point lead over Reading for fourth place in the division, with Reading having two games in hand.

The Bridgeport Islanders secured their twelfth win of the season and their first against the Providence Bruins, holding on for a 4-2 victory. Henrik Tikkanen served as the backup goaltender but stepped in for Hunter Miska, who was pulled after conceding two goals in under a minute at 13:20 and 14:13 of the first period. Tikkanen was flawless in relief, stopping all 22 shots he faced. Although Justin Gill, Jack Randl, Cam McDonald, and Riley Piercey were all in the lineup, they did not contribute to the scoring in Sunday’s game. The significance of that game being that Bridgeport had lost nine consecutive games to Providence this season.

The southern road trip rolls on into next week as the Railers visit the North Charleston Coliseum to take on the South Carolina Stingrays. The game is set to start at 10:30 a.m., with the Stingrays hosting a School Day game.
