Game Story

Glens Falls, NY — The Worcester Railers picked up their first loss of the season as the Adirondack Thunder scored three unanswered goals at the Cool Insuring Arena on Saturday Night.

Tanner Pond and Cody Payne scored for Worcester, Charlie Curti had a two-goal game for the Adirondack, with Kelly Summers scoring the game-winning goal for the Thunder after a pair of goals called off after video review. Railers alum Eamon McAdam made 33 saves in his first appearance against the Railers this season. Evan Buitenhuis made 25 saves in his season debut. Holy Cross alum Jake Bolton made his debut for the Railers and made two shots on goal and had 2 PIMs.

Cody Payne and Michael Sdao dropped the mitts at 8:51 in the first. While there was no question it was a fight, the penalties issued were double minors for roughing. A good sign for both as it won’t count towards their ten fights in accordance with new ECHL rules. Scoreless through the first period, Worcester outshot Adirondack 16-8. Barry Almeida and Michael Sdao each had four shots in the frame.

Tanner Pond broke the scoreless tie at 5:45 in the second, sending a cross-ice feed from Mike Cornell through a crowded net for Worcester’s second power-play goal of the season. Cody Payne capitalized on an Adirondack turnover, sending the puck over the shoulder of Eamon McAdam. Adirondack’s Charlie Curti scored with a snipe from the right circle at 17:34. Kyle Thomas earned a cross-checking penalty behind the Adirondack net in a scramble with Mike Szmatula, around the same time Matt Salhany ran down Evan Buitenhuis on the other end of the ice. This brought Worcester to their second penalty kill of the period with 34 seconds carrying over to the third. Worcester doubled their shot count with another 16 shots with the count at 32-17 in a one-goal game heading into the third.

There was a bit of controversy as Adirondack found iron as their first power play came to a close. A shot by a Thunder skater found the crossbar but did not go in. It was initially waved off with play continuing for the next several minutes. When play stopped, it went to video review and after a few minutes, the officiating crew confirmed that there was no goal.

Charlie Curti tied things up at 8:41 on a rush into the Worcester zone, left uncovered between the circles he scored on a shot over the blocker of Evan Buitenhuis. Kelly Summers scored at 16:15, tapping in a pass from Casey Pierro-Zabotel on the net left wide open by Evan Buitenhuis.

While the third goal was at some fault to Evan Buitenhuis, it wouldn’t have changed a whole lot with Adirondack holding pressure throughout the third and outshooting Worcester 11-3 in that period. Adirondack had another goal called off in the third period, this time it appeared it had crossed the goal line but due to limitations the officiating staff doesn’t have access to the goalie overhead cameras at the Cool Insuring Arena. That no goal was in Worcester’s luck but didn’t change much as the Thunder came back with a goal later on in the period.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Charlie Curti (Adirondack) – 2 goals
  2. Eamon McAdam (Adirondack) – 33 saves, win
  3. Kelly Summers (Adirondack) – 1 goal, GWG

Railers and Thunder will be back at it again on Friday, the same place and the same time.
