Game Story

Glens Falls, NY – The Worcester Railers forced overtime but fell 2-1 to the Adirondack Thunder on Friday night, starting their 3-in-3 with a hard-earned point.

Parker Gahagen turned aside 28 shots in his first ECHL start of the season, while Jakub Malek stopped 21 for the Thunder to earn his first career win. Gahagen becomes the fourth goaltender to suit up for Worcester after previously facing them, joining Josh Boyko, John Muse, and Kaden Fulcher, all of whom also faced the Railers as members of the Reading Royals. Riley Ginnell scored Worcester’s lone goal, while TJ Friedmann and Brannon McManus tallied for Adirondack.

Adirondack opened the scoring just 2:47 into the game on their first shot. TJ Friedmann finished a setup from Chase McLane, who fed him from behind the net for a quick strike from the slot that slipped past Cole Donhauser, Cam McDonald, and Gahagen. The Thunder carried the play early, outshooting Worcester 12-7 in the first period.

At 1:57 of the second, Lincoln Hatten and Jacob Graves dropped the gloves. Graves landed a few early punches before Hatten lost his footing, bringing both players to the ice. Each received five-minute majors for fighting, along with an additional two minutes for removing their helmets. Worcester found themselves shorthanded twice more in the frame, with penalties to MacAuley Carson (slashing at 11:13) and Cam McDonald (cross-checking at 15:59). Adirondack again held the edge in shots, 10-4, stretching the overall margin to 22-11.

Ginnell pulled Worcester even at 10:39 of the third period. Ross Mitton’s initial shot went high off the glass behind the net, where Ryan Miotto gathered the puck and slid it across the crease to Ginnell, who knocked it in. Worcester outshot Adirondack 11-7 in the final frame, but the game remained tied through 60 minutes, with total shots ending 29-22 in favor of the Thunder.

Just 44 seconds into overtime, Brannon McManus ended it, beating Michael Ferrandino and Gahagen on the only shot of the overtime period.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Brannon McManus (Adirondack) – 1 goal
  2. Jakub Malek (Adirondack) – win, 21 saves, 0.955 SV%
  3. Parker Gahagen (Worcester) – 28 saves, 0.933 SV%

In other North Division results, Trois-Rivières rolled to a 5-1 win over Reading, Maine earned a 3-2 victory against Norfolk, Greensboro fell 5-4 to South Carolina in overtime and Wheeling posted a 5-2 win over Toledo. All eight division teams return to action on Saturday.

The Bridgeport Islanders fell 6-3 to the Springfield Thunderbirds earlier on Friday afternoon. They allowed six unanswered goals after scoring three in the first period. Henrik Tikkanen was the backup goaltender while Calle Odelius, Dalyan Kuefler, and Jesse Pulkkinen all dressed for Bridgeport. They head to Springfield for a rematch on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m.

The Railers and Thunder continue their 3-in-3 on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
