Game Story
Glens Falls, NY — On the closing weekend of the regular season, the Worcester Railers traveled to Glens Falls for the first of back-to-back games against the Adirondack Thunder, where they would end up falling 5-1.
The Adirondack Thunder scored five straight goals in an embarrassing effort made by the Worcester Railers. Patrick Grasso scored twice with Sebastian Vidmar, Dajon Mingo, and Shawn Weller each scoring goals. Brent Beaudoin scored the lone goal for Worcester, which would be his 20th of the season. Despite the additions from Jimmy Lambert and Reece Newkirk from Bridgeport earlier in the week, the Railers lacked the scoring to keep up with the Thunder. Henrik Tikkanen started the game, making eight saves before being replaced by Ken Appleby after the Thunder’s fourth goal. Appleby faired well in his relief appearance, stopping all but one of Adirondack’s 15 shots. Mike Robinson picked up his first win against the Railers in his third appearance in a little over two weeks, his easiest appearance to date this season, facing just 23 shots.
In the first period, Adirondack secured a two-goal advantage by scoring twice. Sebastian Vidmar scored on a one-timer from the right circle at 8:31. Vidmar’s goal was set up on a pass by Ryan Smith, giving the Thunder a 1-0 lead. There was a scuffle at 15:07 involving Railers’ rookie defenseman Artyom Kulakov and Matt Jennings. Although punches were exchanged and gloves were taken off, both players were ultimately given minor penalties for roughing. At 15:58 in the first period, Dajon Mingo capitalized on a pass from Shane Harper and sent a wrist shot past Tikkanen, extending the Thunder’s lead to 2-0.
Patrick Grasso scored two consecutive goals in the second period in a 31-second timespan, increasing the Thunder’s lead to 4-0 and forcing a goaltending change. The first goal was scored at 4:51, followed by his 35th goal of the year at 5:20. Henrik Tikkanen was replaced by Ken Appleby in the Railers net. Later on, at 9:20 of the second period, Shawn Weller scored, pushing the Thunder’s lead to 5-0. The Railers struggled to generate offense, managing only four shots in the period, and they failed to land a shot on goal in the last 9:25 of the period.
Worcester eventually scored just 53 seconds into the third period, as Brent Beaudoin found the net for his 20th goal of the year, with assists from Andrei Bakanov and Anthony Repaci, bringing the score to 5-1.
The three stars of Saturday’s game were:
- Patrick Grasso (Adirondack) – 2 goals, 1 assist
- Dajon Mingo (Adirondack) – 1 goal, 1 assist
- Mike Robinson (Adirondack) – 22 saves, win, 0.957 SV%
Elsewhere, in the north division standings that are no longer relevant to either the Railers or Thunder, the Maine Mariners defeated the Norfolk Admirals earlier in the night 7-2. The Newfoundland Growlers beat the Reading Royals 6-2. The Maine Mariners and Norfolk Admirals wrap up their seasons tomorrow, as do the Railers and Thunder. The fourth and final playoff spot will be determined by the last game of the season, taking place in Glens Falls on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. The Railers must win in regulation to secure their playoff spot.
