Worcester – The Worcester Railers and Wheeling Nailers faced off for Night 2 of 2 this weekend. Railers wore Captain America jerseys for the second straight night in a shootout win over division rival Wheeling Nailers.

Neither team could find net in the opening 20 minutes, with the Railers outshooting the Nailers 12-10. TJ Syner put the Railers up in the opening minutes of the second period with a deflection from Justin Hamonic at 2:21. Mid-way through the second period, the Nailers would tie it up on a rush and a backhanded shot in front of the Railers net. Nailers had a 1 shot advantage over the Railers with the game tied at 1 through 20 minutes, shots 20-19 Wheeling.

Nailers’ took a 2-1 lead with a goal scored by Freddie Tiffels on a breakthrough that slipped past Mitch Gillam. Coach Jamie Russell pulled Mitch Gillam with over a minute and a half left in regulation and would tie the game up with a tip-in from Woody Hudson off a deflected shot by Barry Almeida. The game was tied at 2 and shots were tied 29 each heading into the overtime period.

Neither team could find net again in the overtime period with three shots on goal for each team. Railers forward Jeff Kubiak and Nailers defenseman Dan Milan got caught up in each other and were assessed matching roughing penalties in the closing minute of the overtime period.

Into the shootout Matt Lane scored first for the Railers, followed by one by Nailers forward Chris Francis. Tommy Kelley put the game away on his chance that snuck by Matt O’Connor.

The three stars of the game were Woody Hudson (Game-tying goal), Tommy Kelley (GWG, Shootout Goal), and Riley Bouronnais (1 Goal, 1 Assist). Railers are within 6 points of the Wheeling Nailers with 3 games still in hand. Railers will meet the Nailers again on the road on Wednesday, March 7.

Railers close out the weekend with a matinee matchup against the Manchester Monarchs in Worcester. Puck drops at 3 PM.
