Game Story

Worcester, MA – The Worcester Railers took game two of their weekend series against the Wheeling Nailers at the DCU Center on Saturday night, beating the Nailers 3-2.

Tristan Lennox earned his fourth win of the season with 22 saves. Taylor Gauthier picked up his first overtime loss of the season for the Nailers with 28 saves. Anthony Callin, Gabe Blanchard, and Anthony Repaci scored for Worcester. Matt Quercia and Brent Johnson scored for Wheeling. Ryan Miotto (2-4-6) extended his point streak to five games, Michael Suda (0-5-5) is now on a three-game point streak. The Railers wore Worcester Sharks themed specialty jerseys that were auctioned off to benefit The Shine Initiative.

Just as they did Friday night, the Railers opened up scoring with an early goal 43 seconds into the game and on their second shot. Wheeling turned over the puck behind their net, Cole Donhauser made a quick pass to Anthony Callin where he put it over the shoulder of Taylor Gauthier. Gabe Blanchard made it 2-0 at 4:14 in the period, shortly after Ryan Miotto won the faceoff for his first professional goal. Just after the next faceoff, Riley Piercey dropped the gloves with Aiden Sutter, bringing Sutter down to the ice and the Sharks faithful to their feet. Worcester would hold a 2-0 lead, outshooting Wheeling 11-4 in the opening period.

Wheeling would cut the deficit to 2-1 after a long period of no action. They scored the only goal of the second period while Max Graham was in the box for a slashing penalty. Matt Quercia broke through on an odd-man rush, where his shot bounced through the pads of Tristan Lennox at 14:56. Worcester lead 2-1 through forty minutes, Wheeling outshot Worcester 12-8 in the second period.

Wheeling evened the score at 7:30 in the third period when Brent Johnson made a shot through traffic. That would eventually send the game into overtime. Railers would head on a five-minute power play after Bogans Hodass cross-checked Drew Callin to the face with 6:33 left in the third period. Callin would head down the tunnel and later return. Railers would fail to capitalize on that power play as they outshot Wheeling 10-7 in the period.

Anthony Repaci put the game away, securing Worcester’s fourth straight win on a tip-in at 2:31 in the overtime period. Michael Suda skated to the corner and passed to Repaci who swept the puck in on the door step of Gauthier for his third game-winning goal of the season.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Anthony Repaci (Worcester) – game-winning goal
  2. Gabe Blanchard (Worcester) – 1 goal
  3. Matthew Quercia (Wheeling) – 1 goal, 1 assist

All eight North Division teams were in action on Saturday. The Maine Mariners beat the Adirondack Thunder 6-3 in Glens Falls. The Reading Royals beat the Greensboro Gargoyles 2-1 in Reading. The Trois-Rivieres Lions beat the Norfolk Admirals 6-3 at the Norfolk Scope. Maine and Adirondack are the only other division teams playing on Sunday afternoon.

The Bridgeport Islanders fell 5-3 to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Saturday night. Henrik Tikkanen had stopped all seven shots he faced in his relief effort after Marcus Hogberg allowed four through 32 minutes of play. The Islanders host the Springfield Thunderbirds at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Notes

  • Worcester Scratches: Anthony Hora, Connor Federkow, Hunter Hall, MacAuley Carson, Michael Ferrandino, Ross Mitton, and Thomas Gale.
  • Wheeling Scratches: Connor Lockhart and Tommy Budnick.
  • Three former Worcester Sharks were in attendance for this game – Brad Staubitz, Ashton Rome, and Marc Busenburg. They participated in the ceremonial puck drop and signed autographs on the concourse during the first intermission. The Railers held a moment of silence after the ceremonial puck drop for former player Tom Cavanaugh, Sharks Executive Wayne Thomas, and Broadcaster Eric Lindquist. Of note, there was no mention of former Shark Adam Comrie who passed away in a Motorcycle accident in 2020.
  • As fellow jersey snob and Railers Booster Club President Rich Lundin and I usually do during specialty jersey nights, we critiqued the Sharks jersey during warm-ups. The jersey was based off of the teal jersey worn in their later years. The crest was slightly different than the one on the original jerseys, adding a “Worcester” banner on the bottom of the shield which was never worn as a crest. The font on the nameplate and the numbers were significantly different than the originals. The striping on the hem and the shoulders were also bolder than the originals. A nice touch to the jerseys was the inclusion of the initials of Wayne Thomas and Eric Lindquist on the striping on both sleeves.
