Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers picked up a point as they fell 3-2 to the Trois-Rivieres Lions in the shootout on Sunday afternoon at the DCU Center.

John Muse returned to the net for the Railers, turning aside 38 shots from Trois-Rivières. The Lions also switched up their goaltending, with Hunter Jones in net, matching Muse’s effort with 38 saves of his own. This marked the third consecutive overtime or shootout game for Muse, following overtime victories on November 10 against Norfolk and November 16 at Trois-Rivières. Remarkably, all four of Muse’s starts this season have been decided by a single goal. For the Lions, Anthony Beauregard and Logan Nijhoff found the back of the net, with Beauregard winning the game in the third round of the shootout. On the Railers’ side, Anthony Repaci and Jack Randl provided the scoring.

The Trois-Rivières Lions controlled the first period, with Anthony Beauregard breaking the ice at 15:53, scoring on a rebound. The Lions dominated in shots, outshooting Worcester 14-5. It was a physical and heated period, highlighted by an attempted fight between Griffin Loughran and Tyler Hylland at 13:19, which fizzled out before gloves came off after a cross-check from Loughran. Later, Kolby Johnson instigated a clash with Jakov Novak at 2:33, sparking a scrum between both teams. Johnson received a game misconduct, while Ryan Dickinson was assessed a 10-minute misconduct for continuing the altercation. The Lions ended the period with a 5-minute power play, which carried into the second but was successfully killed by the Railers.

Worcester came alive in the second period, scoring twice to take their first lead in seven games, excluding their overtime win on November 16. Anthony Repaci struck first at 9:15, finishing a one-timer from Jordan Kaplan on a 3-on-2 rush. Just 33 seconds into a power play, Jack Randl made it 2-1. Tensions escalated when Lions head coach Ron Choules was ejected at 13:05 for arguing with officials, giving the Railers a power play they couldn’t capitalize on. Meanwhile, Griffin Loughran left the ice after a collision caused a bloody injury but returned late in the third period wearing a re-installed face shield, though he didn’t take another shift.

The Railers faced another penalty kill to open the third, with Griffin Luce in the box for slashing at 19:16 of the second. Just 55 seconds into the period, Logan Nijhoff tied the game for the Lions with a shot from between the circles. Worcester had a chance to reclaim the lead with a 5-on-3 power play after penalties to Nijhoff and Morgan Adams-Moisan (for a questionable hit on Anthony Callin that should have been called charging), but they failed to convert.

The game progressed to overtime, with Worcester outshooting Trois-Rivières 5-4 in the extra frame and 35-26 from the second period onward. In the shootout, Anthony Beauregard scored in the third round, sealing the victory for the Lions. Despite Railers goaltender Muse initially stopping the shot, the puck crossed the line, handing Trois-Rivières the win.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Anthony Beauregard (Trois-Rivieres) – 1 goal, shootout goal
  2. Hunter Jones (Trois-Rivieres) – 38 saves, win, 0.950 SV%
  3. John Muse (Worcester) – 38 saves, 0.950 SV%

The Adirondack Thunder beat the South Carolina Stingrays 5-1 in the only other action for North Division teams. South Carolina had won all five prior games against north division teams heading into that game. The Bridgeport Islanders beat the Hartford Wolf Pack 5-1 on Sunday, Justin Gill was the only player with Railers roots in the line-up for Bridgeport, tallying an assist in the win. Six of the Seven North Division teams play on Wednesday night.

The Railers will play their next four games on the road, heading to Wichita to face the Thunder on November 27, 29, and 30. They’ll head to Glens Falls for a game on December 4th before returning home for eight games. Wednesday’s game is slated for a 7:05 EST puck drop, 6:05 CST.
