Game Story
Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers and the Orlando Solar Bears met for the first of two games this weekend. These games mark Orlando’s first trip to Worcester in their franchise history. The Solar Bears and Railers played a set of three games last season in Florida, with Orlando taking two of those three games. Continuing on the momentum of Wednesday and Thursday’s shootout wins, the Railers brought another win to fold at 5-1.
It was once again Evan Buitenhuis in net for Worcester and Corbin Boes and Hayden Stewart in net for Orlando. Former Worcester Shark Curt Gogol made his return to the DCU Center playing for the Solar Bears.
The first period saw two strong goals for the Railers. One could say it was one of the most entertaining periods from the Railers this season. Mike Cornell scored his second of the season, ripping a shot from the blue line to give the Railers an early lead on the power play. Moments later, he fought Stefan Fournier which we’ll describe as “not the best” for Cornell. Orlando tied it up at 6:59 with a goal from Matthew Spencer. Woody Hudson fought former Worcester Shark Curt Gogol, which was a refreshing scrap seeing as the Railers haven’t had many scraps with enforcer Yanick Turcotte missing from the line-up. Railers closed up the period with a goal that was tipped-in by Nick Bligh.
Railers saw two goals in the second period, bringing the lead to 4-1. Nick Bligh caught a pass to the right side of the net, slapping in his fifth of the season and the second of the game from the right side of the net. Ivan Kosorenkov scored his third of the season and extended the Railers lead to three goals by deking both a Solar Bears skater and goaltender along the left side of the net. Hayden Stewart came into the game after the fourth Railer goal, relieving Corbin Boes who saw 20 shots.
Railers were able to hold their lead going into the game’s final frame. Matt Gaudreau extended the Railers lead to four, finding a pass from Tyler Mueller and netting the puck to the left of goaltender Hayden Stewart.
Shots were 34-32 after 60, with Worcester taking their third straight win 5-1.
The Three Stars of the Game Were:
- Nick Bligh (Worcester) – 2 goals
- Ivan Kosorenkov (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist
- Matt Gaudreau (Worcester) – 1 goal, 2 assists
Do We Know You From Somewhere?: The Railers and Solar Bears will face each other again on Sunday at 3 PM.
