Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers continued their winning momentum with a blowout 5-2 win over the Admirals at the DCU Center on Sunday afternoon.

The Railers tied a city record with their eighth consecutive win, a tie with the Worcester Sharks who went on a historic eight-game win streak to kick off 2015. The boys in orange also tied an ECHL league record for the longest win streak to kick off a season that has been done twice – in 1994 with the Dayton Bombers, and in 2001 with the Trenton Titans. Quinn Ryan, Brent Beaudoin, Collin Adams, Jimmy Lambert, and Jacob Hayhurst each scored for Worcester. Ken Appleby stopped 35 shots with another strong performance that all came crashing down with two Norfolk goals in the closing 1:25. Ryan MacKinnon was a game-high plus-4 and picked up his fourth point of the season.

Quinn Ryan scored the first goal for Worcester, crashing the net and scoring as the puck inched past Norfolk goaltender Tomas Vomacka after making the initial save at 2:31. Brent Beaudoin doubled up the Railers lead five minutes later with a one-timer that was fed by Jimmy Lambert from behind the Norfolk net at 8:25. Railers led 2-0 while being outshot by the Admirals 15 to 13 after twenty minutes.

Collin Adams, who left the game after taking a stick to the face during a power play in the first period, returned with some vengeance and scored the first of three Railers goals in the third period. Adam’s goal came at 7:05 in the period and came off a lucky bounce from the left circle which came off a Norfolk skater and into the net for his fifth goal of the season, and the fifth Railers power-play goal of the season. Jimmy Lambert extended the Railers’ lead to four, sneaking the puck glove-side at 12:38. Jacob Hayhurst scored the Railers’ final goal on a top-shelf snipe with 13 seconds remaining in the third, which popped the water bottle off the net. Railers were running with a five-point lead; outshooting Norfolk 15-9 in the period.

Admirals halted a Railers shutout with two goals in the closing two minutes of the game. Aiden Brown shot a puck from behind the net and was bounced in off a Railers stick at 18:35. Cody Milan scored Norfolk’s second goal by deflecting a shot from Carson Musser in front of a crowded net with three seconds remaining in the third. Both scoring shots were hard to beat and was the second time this season he had a shutout bid cutoff in the closing five minutes of a game.

The three stars of Saturday’s game were:

  1. Ken Appleby (Worcester) – 35 saves, 1 assist, win, 0.946 SV%
  2. Jimmy Lambert (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  3. Collin Adams (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist

Railers and Admirals will meet again Tuesday morning for the Railers’ annual school day game with an expected attendance of 5,500 local school kids, plus their chaperones and anyone else who’s calling in sick to see if the Railers can keep the momentum rolling. The puck drop for that game is slated for 10 AM.
