Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Norfolk Admirals completed a weekend sweep of the Worcester Railers 5-2 on Saturday night, with four of their goals coming in the third period.

Both squads made goalie changes, with Tristan Lennox starting for Worcester and Thomas Millic starting position on the opposite side of the ice. Lennox faced 28 shots, allowing four to get past him. Thomas Millic showcased an impressive performance with 38 saves, marking a career-high in his tenth game of the season. Ashton Calder and Keeghan Howdeshell found the back of the net for Worcester, while Simon Kubicek, Carson Golder, Danny Katic, and Mathieu Roy contributed goals for the Admirals. The teams amassed a combined total of 62 penalty minutes, with 23 penalties called throughout the game. Norfolk had four power-play goals with nine power-play opportunities. Worcester was unsuccessful on all six of their power plays. The Railers came into the game with a 6-0-1 record while scoring first, and a 4-0 record when leading after the first and second periods.

Ashton Calder put the Railers up 1-0 at 11:44 in the first period, scoring five-hole off a rebound from Connor Welsh. Admirals would outshoot and outplay the Railers in the first period 11-8, but the Railers got lucky with the first goal of the game.

Tensions rose in the second period, with Mark Liwiski and Artyom Kulakov exchanging words and Kulakov landing some right hands behind Tristan Lennox’s net. Kulakov spent four minutes in the penalty box, giving the Admirals a power play, while Liwiski served a two-minute penalty. Simon Kubicek tied the game on a slapshot during that power play at 15:06. Shortly after, the Railers took a 2-1 lead as Keeghan Howdeshell converted a one-timer pass from Joey Cipollone during a 2-on-1 rush into the Norfolk zone. Worcester held a 2-1 advantage going into the third period, outshooting the Admirals 18-10 in the second period.

Norfolk initiated their comeback with consecutive power-play goals by Carson Golder within a 38-second span. Golder’s first goal came off a rebound from Andrew McLean, tying the game at two. A skirmish at 4:30 in the period resulted in penalties for Riley Piercey, Connor Welsh, and Simon Kubicek for roughing, leading to another power play for Norfolk. Golder capitalized on this power play, scoring 12 seconds into it with an assist from Mathieu Roy. Mark Liwiski was penalized for diving at 5:18 and ejected after exchanging words with officials. Danny Katic scored on a one-timer at 7:57, bringing the score to 4-2. With less than five minutes remaining, Tristan Lennox was pulled, and Mathieu Roy sealed Norfolk’s second-weekend win over Worcester with a shot from center ice.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Carson Golder (Norfolk) – 2 goals
  2. Ryan Foss (Norfolk) – 2 assists
  3. Ashton Calder (Worcester)  – 1 goal

In the North division, the Maine Mariners suffered a 3-2 overtime defeat to the Kansas City Mavericks. The Trois-Rivieres Lions secured a 5-4 victory on the road against the Jacksonville Icemen, while the Reading Royals triumphed 5-3 over the Kalamazoo Wings. Breaking a scoreless tie, the Adirondack Thunder claimed a 1-0 overtime win against the Florida Everblades. Meanwhile, the Newfoundland Growlers emerged victorious with a 5-4 score against the Idaho Steelheads on Saturday night. Not looking good for the Railers as most North division teams faced teams in other divisions this week, and all have picked up points in those games. Railers have none. Trois-Rivieres is the lone North division team playing on Sunday.

Looking ahead, the Railers will conclude their five-game homestand next weekend with consecutive matchups against the Adirondack Thunder, starting on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
