Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers dropped the second game of their five-game homestand to the Norfolk Admirals with a final score of 4-1 on Friday night.

Henrik Tikkanen made his eighth appearance of the season, stopping 24 of 27 shots. Yaniv Perets made his eighth start as well for the Admirals, stopping all but one of Worcester’s 31 shots in his second appearance against the Railers this season. Ashton Calder scored the only goal for Worcester, which came on the power play, which ended a seven-game skid of games without a power play goal. The goal scorers for Norfolk were Keaton Jameson, Mark Liwiski, Keegan Iverson, and Mathieu Roy.

Friday night’s game had a 70’s night theme, drawing a listed crowd of 1,839. While it’s likely that “Same Old Song and Dance” by Aerosmith played at some point during the night, it has become the unofficial anthem of the Railers, symbolizing a lack of improvement from the previous season. The Railers continue to struggle offensively, with the same players contributing goals when they manage to score. Their record stands at 0-7-0-1 when trailing after the first period.

The Admirals broke the scoreless tie at 16:31 in the first period. During a line change, Keaton Jameson entered the ice, forced a turnover at center ice, and skated to the right circle, getting a top-shelf snipe past Henrik Tikkanen. This goal gave the Admirals a 1-0 the lead heading into the second period.

Ashton Calder leveled the game at 8:49 on the power play, courtesy of a one-timer from the point by Connor Welsh. Jake Pivonka had a shot on goal about a minute later but wouldn’t register another until 15 minutes later in the game. Blade Jenkins eventually took the next shot nearly six minutes into the third period.

Mark Liwiski regained the lead for the Admirals at 4:24 in the third period, skillfully maneuvering around Railers skaters and Henrik Tikkanen to score on a deke. Keegan Iverson extended the lead to 3-1 on a 3-on-1 rush into the Railers’ zone, sniping from the left circle four minutes later.

In the final five minutes of the game, the Railers had a 6-on-4 advantage due to two Admirals penalties and an extra attacker. However, they couldn’t capitalize on this opportunity. The first penalty expired, and Zach White was called for hooking, resulting in a 4-on-4 situation. Tikkanen was pulled again, and with nine seconds left on the clock, Mathieu Roy sealed the game with an empty-net goal.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Yaniv Parets (Norfolk) – 30 saves, win, 0.968 SV%
  2. Keaton Jameson (Norfolk) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  3. Ashton Calder (Worcester) – 1 goal

The Adirondack Thunder, Newfoundland Growlers, and Maine Mariners played in inter-division play on Friday. The Thunder beat the Everblades 5-3, and the Mariners beat the Mavericks 5-2. As of this writing, Newfoundland was down 7-2 to the Idaho Steelehads after two periods. With Maine and Adirondack doing well outside of the division, it isn’t doing the Railers any favor as the losses continue to pile up.

The Railers and Admirals close out their weeks with a rematch at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday.
