Game Story
Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers and Manchester Monarchs met on Wednesday for the third game between the two teams this season.
Mitch Gillam made his long-awaited return to the net after spending the past week on recall with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Coming into the game, Gillam was running on a three-game win streak and a very impressive twelve-game win streak at the DCU Center. He would go on to extend that streak to four straight games this season, and a lucky thirteen straight at home with the 3-1 win on Wednesday. The Railers win would be supplemented with goals by Almeida (9th), Doherty (1st), and Holmstrom (7th).
The Game went scoreless with a lot of back-and-forth action between the two teams. Connor Doherty picked up his fourth fighting major in a scrap against Craig Wyszomirski. Worcester went 0-for-3 on the power play in the opening frame. Railers had the edge in shots with the shot count being 9-6 in their favor.
Barry Almeida would get the scoring going with a shot on the open net of Chris Driedger at 3:52 in the second period. The first lead of the night would last less than a minute with Nic Pierog deking Mitch Gillam for his eleventh goal of the season at 4:35. Railers would regain the lead two minutes later with Connor Doherty’s first goal of the season from the blue line, which may have made contact with a Monarchs skater before going in. Mike Cornell picked up his fourth fighting major against Eric Schurhamer in a scrap that looked to be about even. Josh Holmstrom scored the Railers tenth power play goal of the season, tipping in a rebound from Nick Sorkin to close out the second period at 38.9 seconds.
With a rather quiet third period, Chris Carlsile brought the game to within one with a goal scored from the blueline at 14:53. Monarchs pulled their goalie for the extra attacker with 1:59 and 20 seconds remaining on a power play, but was not enough to tie the game back up.
The Railers are back to .500 (11-11-3-0) with their win on Wednesday. They are tied with Maine for fifth in the north division and are two points out from third place and four points out of second place.
The Three Stars of the Game were:
- Connor Doherty (Worcester) – goal, fight
- Barry Almeida (Worcester) – goal
- Ryan MacKinnon (Worcester) – assist
Back on the Train: The Railers’ December of division match-ups continues against the Monarchs again on Friday. Puck drops at 7 PM.
