Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers fell 8-1 to the Maine Mariners on Saturday night, dropping the second game of their three-game weekend series.

Henrik Tikkanen made his fourth start of the season, stopping 16 shots before being pulled late in the second period after Maine’s sixth goal. Tristan Lennox finished the game, allowing two goals on 11 shots over the final 21:40. Brad Arvanitis earned his first win of the year for Maine with 25 saves on 26 shots.

Maine’s offense exploded with goals from Linus Hemstrom, Jacob Hudson, Xander Lamppa (2), Jaxon Ballamy, and Lynden McCallum, who recorded a hat trick. Jesse Nurmi netted Worcester’s lone goal midway through the third period, assisted by Ross Mitton.

The night marked Worcester’s annual “Railers Fight Cancer” game, benefiting Why Me & Sherry’s House. All 31 specialty jerseys were auctioned during the game, with Henrik Tikkanen’s selling for $1,500 and captain Anthony Repaci’s for $1,000. The team also celebrated its one-millionth ticket sold milestone since joining the ECHL. A raffle for one additional jersey will be drawn during Sunday’s game.

Through three meetings this season, Maine has outscored Worcester 17-1. The Mariners’ 12 goals this weekend alone surpass Worcester’s total across their first eight games of the year.

Maine opened the scoring at 3:47 of the first when Linus Hemstrom finished a 2-on-1 feed from Sebastian Vidmar that slipped through Tikkanen’s glove side. Worcester went 0-for-2 on the power play in the frame and trailed 9-8 in shots after 20 minutes.

The second period was all Maine. Lynden McCallum scored twice just 17 seconds apart (1:49 and 2:06), both redirections at the top of the crease. Jacob Hudson added a power-play goal off a Railers skater at 15:42, followed by McCallum’s third at 17:55 on another man-advantage, his third professional hat trick. Xander Lamppa deflected a Zachary Massicotte point shot to make it 6-0 before the second intermission.

Tempers boiled over when Lincoln Hatten dropped the gloves with Jaxon Ballamy at 5:32. Later, Tikkanen exchanged words with the bench after being pulled, while head coach Nick Tuzzolino tossed his whiteboards down the tunnel in visible frustration.

Lincoln Hatten fought Jaxon Ballamy at 5:32 in the second period. Hatten landed most of his punches before Ballamy dragged them both down and sending them to their respective penalty boxes. Frustrations were clear when Henrik Tikkanen had some words for the Railers bench after he was pulled for Tristan Lennox at 18:20. Head coach Nick Tuzzolino also showing his frustrations, throwing his whiteboards down the Railers tunnel as the game went into the second intermission.

Jesse Nurmi killed Arvanitis’ shutout hopes at 10:07, ending Maine’s 170:07 shutout streak against Worcester. Nurmi had a quick shot after Arvanitis made a poke check with the puck landing at his feet and put it over Arvanitis’ shoulder for his first career goal. Xander Lamppa made it 7-1, getting a loose puck past Lennox at 18:41. Jaxon Ballamy scored Maine’s eighth goal with 15 seconds remaining to put the final score at 8-1, shot totals were 33-26.

Riley Ginnell had put the puck in the net at 14:38 in the third period, while James Marooney was in the box for Maine for a double minor for high-sticking on Cole Donhauser. The goal was ruled no goal on the ice, and a video review had confirmed that.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Lynden McCallum (Maine) – 3 goals, +2
  2. Robert Cronin (Maine) – 3 assists, +2
  3. Brad Arvanitis (Maine) – win, 25 saves, 0.962 SV%
