Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Railers return to Worcester after a 5-2 win over Manchester was nothing short of an action-packed as they beat the Maine Mariners 5-3 on Saturday.

Mitch Gillam earned his fifth straight win, stopping 24 of 27 shots on the night. Railers used the same line-up as the previous night in Manchester. Worcester and Maine battled back-and-forth throughout the opening two periods, but Worcester was able to hold on after their third lead of the night. Worcester goals were scored by: Tyler Barnes (25th & 26th), Ryan Hitchcock (16th), Dylan Willick (8th) and Barry Almeida (21st).

Former Railer Dwyer Tschantz scored Maine’s first goal of the night at 3:44 in the opening period. Tyler Barnes scored his 25th of the season at 5:25, where a quick pass from Ryan Hitchcock made its way under the crossbar to tie things up. Josh Holmstrom sat for the only power play of the period which was rightfully earned after tripping Dillan Fox at center ice.

Things heated up in the second period with a five-goal in the opening half. Tyler Barnes made contact with a David Quenneville shot to regain the Railers lead at 2:16. Worcester’s second lead of the night would be cut short with Dillan Fox scoring his 10th of the season ten seconds later. Railers were successful on their only power play of the night, that came a little bit later with Ryan Hitchcock netting his 16th of the season. Michael McNicholas tied things up for a third time at 9:36. Dylan Willick scored his second goal of the weekend from the left circle 44 seconds later to give Worcester their third lead of the night. Worcester led 4-3 through 40 minutes,

Railers held possession of the puck for a majority of the third period. The reason they were able to stick with it an pull out a win, was their ability to keep the puck in the zone for so long in this game – more so in the third period. Chris Nell was pulled for the extra attacker with a little over a minute remaining on the clock. Barry Almeida scored on the empty net to secure the win with 32 seconds remaining. Tyler Barnes came close to Worcester’s first hat trick of the season but had to settle for an assist on Almeida’s insurance goal.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. Tyler Barnes (Worcester) – 2 goals, 2 assists
  2. Ryan Hitchcock (Worcester) – 1 goal, 2 assists
  3. David Quenneville (Worcester) – 2 assists

With a record of (30-23-5-4, 69 pts), the Worcester Railers are tied with Maine for third place in the north division and have finally made their way into a playoff spot. The battle to stay in that spot continues tomorrow with the Monarchs coming to town at 3 PM.
