Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers lost 4-3 to the Maine Mariners in the second of three games at the DCU Center this weekend.

Michael Bullion made his tenth start of the season on Saturday, making 32 saves, he is 1-1 in games against Maine this season. Ryan Bischel started for Maine with 24 saves, he is undefeated in both appearances against Worcester this season. Owen Pederson, Justin Bean, Jimmy Lambert, and Matthew Philip scored for Maine. Griffin Loughran, Anthony Repaci, and Anthony Callin scored for Worcester. Anthony Callin scored his first goal of the season and snapped a nine-game scoring drought.

The Railers quickly found themselves trailing 2-0 in the first period, allowing two goals in the first ten minutes of the game. At 7:37, Maine took the lead on a shot from Justin Bean shot from the right point deflected off Jacob Hudson’s skate, and Owen Pederson capitalized by firing the loose puck under the crossbar for the opening goal. Bean followed up with a goal of his own at 9:23, stepping into the play after a faceoff and beating Michael Bullion’s glove with a shot from the top of the right circle. The Railers responded late in the period when Griffin Loughran scored on a breakaway with just 18 seconds remaining, cutting the deficit to 2-1 after 20 minutes.

Maine extended their lead with two goals in the second period. At 6:39, Jimmy Lambert showcased his skill by tucking a backhand shot from below the goal line to make it 3-1. Later, at 17:54, Jacob Hudson sent a pass through the neutral zone, setting up Matthew Philip for a breakaway. Philip netted his first professional goal to give the Mariners a 4-1 advantage heading into the final frame.

The Railers pushed back in the third period. Anthony Repaci scored a shorthanded goal at 11:07 off a feed from Matt DeMelis, bringing Worcester within two. With 1:31 left in regulation, Anthony Callin scored with the goaltender pulled, cutting the deficit to 4-3. Despite the late surge, the Mariners held on for the win.

The Railers have a slight edge over the Mariners with a 3-2 record in the 5 meetings so far this season, including Friday’s overtime win. They’ll face each other six more times this season.

The Trois-Rivières Lions defeated the Idaho Steelheads 6-3 earlier in the evening, while the Wheeling Nailers blanked the Cincinnati Cyclones with a 3-0 shutout. The Adirondack Thunder edged the Reading Royals 3-2 in overtime. On Sunday, six of the seven North Division teams will be in action, with the Adirondack Thunder getting the day off. In the AHL, the Providence Bruins bested the Bridgeport Islanders 6-3 on Saturday night, with Henrik Tikkanen making 22 saves in his second AHL start of the season.

The Railers return to the DCU Center on Sunday to wrap up their 3-in-3 weekend, facing the Norfolk Admirals at 3:05 p.m.
