Game Story

Worcester, MA — Closing out the 2018 year, the Worcester Railers faced the Maine Mariners at the DCU Center for the second of two games in the final week of the year.

Evan Buitenhuis made his first appearance since December 15, exactly two weeks from today. Mariners’ Hannu Toivonen played in his first ECHL game since the 2013-14 season for the Toledo Walleye and his first in North America this season. Morgan Adams-Moisan (7th), Greg Chase (5th), and Michael McNicholas (8th) scored for Maine. Nick Sorkin (7th) scored the only goal for Worcester.

Yanick Turcotte got the fireworks started with Louie Rowe right off the opening face-off, which would be the Railers 25th fighting major of the season. Morgan Adams-Moisan maneuvered the puck at the crease past the pads of Evan Buitenhuis at 12:43. Greg Chase extended the Mariners lead to two with another shot between the pads of Buitenhuis four minutes later. After 20, Mariners led 2-0 with Worcester outshooting them 10-8.

Morgan Adams-Moisan had 22 seconds left on a hooking penalty to start the second period and as the period started he was not in the box and the Mariners had five skaters out on the ice. How the Mariners managed to pull that off is beyond me, but the officiating should’ve been on top of penalties heading into the next period.

McNicholas netted his eighth of the season on the power play at 16 minutes in the second period. Matt Schmalz was called for hooking on the play before on Mariners’ John Furgele, Furgele made a dive which was enough to convince referee Andrea Barone to call the penalty. Mariners led 3-0 after forty, shots 26-19 in Worcester’s favor.

Maine looked to net their fourth of the game at 16:02 in the third period. The light went off and the team celebrated but was later called off as there was goaltender interference called on the play with Alex Kile skating into Buitenhuis about 15 seconds prior. Nick Sorkin killed Maine’s chances of a shutout, ripping a shot top-shelf at the crease with 1:36 remaining in the third period.

Railers are back below .500 as the offense fails to generate a goal on 42 shots tonight.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. Hannu Toivonen (Maine) – 41 saves, win
  2. Greg Chase (Maine) – 1 goal
  3. Scott Savage (Worcester) – 1 assist

Train Kept a-Rollin’: The Railers will pick things up after the start of the New Year with a trip to South Carolina to face the Greenville Swamp Rabbits and the South Carolina Stingrays next weekend.
