Game Story
Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers brought in the month of December with an afternoon match-up against the Maine Mariners on Sunday. It was the fifth match-up out of fourteen between the two this season.
Mitch Gillam made his fourth consecutive start for Worcester. Matt Gaudreau (2nd), Ryan Hitchcock (1st), and Tyler Barnes (8th) scored for Worcester. Alex Vanier picked up his first professional fight in the Railers’ 3-2 win on Sunday.
Maine got on the board first with Ty Ronning finding the far left corner of the net off the faceoff at the right circle at 15:42. Worcester was quick to bounce back with goal a minute and a twenty seconds later. The goal was Ryan Hitchcock’s first ECHL goal, catching a pass from Tyler Barnes to the back of the net.
Matt Gaudreau gave the Railers their second lead of the night with a feed to the left circle from Austin Block. Ryan Ferril tied it back up for Maine, breaking through with the a runaway puck destined for Ryan MacKinnon. Alex Vanier picked up his first pro fight against Ryan Ferril, Vanier getting more punches in for the record.
Tyler Barnes broke the tie with 34.4 seconds left in regulation with a bounce off the face-off in the Mariners zone. Railers had 20 shots in the third period, which is now the record for most in the third.
Railers jump into sixth place in the north division with a record of 9-10-2 (20 points) in 21 games.

- Ryan Hitchcock and Tyler Barnes are now on a three game point streak.
- Kyle McKenzie’s injury sustained in Tuesday’s game against Brampton isn’t expected to be too serious, but will still miss a couple of weeks. McKenzie, along with Malcolm Gould, assisted in the Worcester County Sheriff Office’s annual toy drive earlier this week with Railers’ Community Relations Coordinator Paul Harris.
