Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers five-game homestand was kicked-off Friday, falling 5-1 to the Idaho Steelheads at the DCU Center.

The Worcester Railers offensive struggles continued on Friday being outshot 48-23 and all-around dominated by Mountain Division’s Idaho Steelheads. Ken Appleby faced a season-high 48 shots. Reece Newkirk scored Worcester’s only goal. The Railers are now 2-3 in December and have lost their last three games. Railers made just 23 shots on goal on goaltender Adam Scheel, which ties the second least amount of shots made by the Railers this season.

A.J. White scored twice in the first period for Idaho followed by goals by Wade Murphy, Owen Headrick, and Colton Kehler in the third period. Railers alum Wade Murphy, who scored the first goal in franchise history, had a goal and two assists and was a game-high plus-5 on the night.

Reece Newkirk cut the Railers deficit to 1 at 11:20 in the second period. Shot totals were brought to 31-12 in favor of Idaho in the period.

The Railers last power play goal came four games ago, on December 3 at Newfoundland. There are 0-for-10 on power play opportunities since. Despite the Railers looking their offensive best on the power play Friday night, they were unsuccessful in building the forward momentum needed to take down the Steelheads.

The Three stars of Friday night’s game were:

  1. A.J. White (Idaho) – 2 goals, 1 assist
  2. Jordan Kawaguchi (Idaho) – 2 assists
  3. Wade Murphy (Idaho) – 1 goal, 2 assists

Around the ECHL North, Newfoundland topped Iowa in their second straight game in overtime, 3-2. Allen Americans beat Reading 3-1. Trois-Rivieres defeated Maine 3-2. The Railers are now tied with the Newfoundland Growlers at 33 points in the division. Idaho Steelheads and Cincinnati Cyclones outrank the Railers and Growlers with win percentages of 0.816 and 0.789, respectively.

The homestand continues Saturday with the Railers hosting the Steelheads with the Railers wearing New England Football jerseys auctioned off to benefit the Shine Inititive. Puck drop for that game is 7:05.
