Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers and Idaho Steelheads faced off for the second of three meetings at the DCU Center on Saturday night.

The team wore gray New England Patriots specialty jerseys that were auctioned off during the game to benefit the Shine Initiative, and the team hosted its annual Teddy Bear Toss night. Henrik Tikkanen stopped 15 of 19 shots made by Idaho while Rémi Poirer made 35 saves in Idaho’s second-straight win over Worcester. Quinn Ryan scored Worcester’s lone goal and now leads the team with nine on the season. Idaho had four different goal scorers on the night – Owen Headrick, Patrick Kudla, Ryan Dmowski, and Ty Pelton-Byce. Idaho had two power-play goals, a shorthanded goal, and a goal with a missed penalty behind the play – a big night for their special teams units.

Quinn Ryan converted on the Railers’ first power play, sending the Teddy Bears flying at 7:34 on a one-timer set up by Liam Coughlin. It would be the only lead the Railers had all night and the first time in five games (December 4, at Newfoundland) that they held a lead in any capacity. Railers led 1-0, and outshot Idaho 9-8.

The Railers’ lead would be shortlived with the Steelheads scoring three times in a six-minute frame in the second period. Their downfall began with Idaho’s first goal at 12:13 on the power play with a slapshot from Owen Headrick. They would extend their lead two 2-1 with a wrist shot from Patrick Kudla at 15:58 which was also on the power play. The Steelheads’ lead was brought to 3-1 on an odd-man rush at 18:50, Ryan Dmowski was fed the puck upfront from Jade Miller to get past the pads of Henrik Tikkanen. Prior to Idaho’s third goal, Reece Newkirk was tripped up behind the net which went unpenalized by referee Dominic Cadieux.

Railers were unable to find the net on any of their 14 shots in the third period, including much of a two-man advantage as Henrik Tikkanen was pulled during a power play. Railers’ defense limited the Steelheads to just one shot on goal which the Steelheads scored while shorthanded at 8:50. Idaho’s fourth goal was scored shortly after a bad turnover in the Railers’ zone, Jack Becker picked up the puck and passed it to Ty Pelton-Byce up front to beat Henrik Tikkanen and secure their victory.

The three stars of Saturday night’s game were:

  1. Ryan Dmowski (Idaho) – 1 goal, 2 assists
  2. Rémi Poirier (Idaho) – win, 35 saves, 0.972 SV%
  3. Quinn Ryan (Worcester) – 1 goal

Newfoundland beat Iowa in overtime in their third straight meeting. Maine topped Trois-Rivieres 4-2, and Norfolk picked up their third win of the season 6-4 over the Adirondack Thunder. With Newfoundland winning on Saturday night, they now lead the ECHL with 35 points. Idaho has tied Worcester for second with 33 points and has a league-leading 0.825 win percentage.

The Railers’ 3-in-3 weekend against the Idaho Steelheads wraps up on Sunday with a puck drop slated for 3 PM.
