Game Story

Worcester, MA – The Worcester Railers dropped the first of three meetings against the Florida Everblades 4-1 on Friday night.

Tristan Lennox made 22 saves in his tenth appearance for the Railers this season. Will Cranley stopped all but one of the 14 shots for the Everblades. The Railers wore IceCats specialty jerseys which are based on the black alternate jerseys worn during the ‘Cats fifth season, and will wear them again on Saturday night. Drew Callin scored the lone goal for Worcester. Craig Needham, Logan Will, and Tarun Fizer were the goal scorers for Florida. This was Worcester’s first home game since December 20, with two home games on December 27 and 28 being postponed due to the ECHL’s player strike.

The game was scoreless through the opening twenty minutes. Adam Samuelsson dropped the gloves with Oliver Cooper at the 10:25 mark in the period. It was a quick take down for Cooper, who brought Samuelsson down to the ice after Samuelsson missed a punch. A shot at the last second in the period gave Florida the upperhand, outshooting Worcester 6-5.

Max Dorrington dropped the gloves with Sean Allen at 4:21, coming up on top after landing most of his punches at center ice. That momentum would not be enough when 1:25 later, Craig Needham scored on a tip-in on a shot from Jordan Sambrook. Just under six minutes later, Logan Will scored seconds after finding the post for a 2-0 lead. Drew Callin scored on a tip-in, connecting on a shot from Ryan Miotto at 16:22. Tarun Fizer regained the two goal lead 32 seconds later, making the game 3-1 heading into the third period.

Railers had the only power play at 8:53 in the third period and failed to register a shot on goal in that time. Tristan Lennox was pulled for the extra attacker with 3:45 left in the third period, as soon as he got to the bench, Tarun Fizer had found the empty net to give Florida the 4-1 victory.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Quinton Burns (Florida) – 4 assists, +4
  2. Tarun Fizer (Florida) – 2 goals, +2
  3. Drew Callin (Worcester) – 1 goal

Chase Yoder’s four goal game propelled the Norfolk Admirals to a 6-1 win over the Adirondack Thunder earlier in the evening. The Maine Mariners overcame a 3-1 deficit to force overtime and beat the Reading Royals 4-3. The Wheeling Nailers beat the Trois-Rivieres Lions 4-3. All North Division teams play on Saturday in rematches from Friday.

The Bridgeport Islanders fell 4-1 to the Providence Bruins on Friday night. Calle Odelius and Dalyan Kuefler were dressed, but did not make the scoresheet. They host the Utica Comets on Saturday night.

The Worcester IceCats host the Everblades again on Saturday for Game 2 of the weekend series, puck drops at 6:05 p.m.
