Game Story

Worcester, MA – The Worcester Railers and Adirondack Thunder faced-off Sunday for their tenth match-up of the season. Railers gave up no chances in the division matchup where every game is a must-win while chasing a playoff spot.

Having been reassigned to Worcester after being a healthy scratch in Bridgeport last night, defenseman Mike Cornell made his reassignment worth it with the game-winning goal.

Adirondack scored the only goal of the first period with a shot from Kenton Miller that went between the glove and helmet of Railers’ goaltender Mitch Gillam. Railers trailed 1-0 while holding a 10 shot-tie.

Jeff Kubiak put the Railers on the board in the opening 90 seconds of the second, with assists from Woody Hudson and Justin Hamonic. Adirondack regained the lead four and a half minutes later. Railers tied the game up again with a goal by Matt Lane from deflected shot by Ryan MacKinnon. The game was tied at 2 with the Railers outshooting the Thunder 23-18.

Neither team scored in the third period with the Railers outshooting the Thunder 34-26.

Heading into the Shootout, the Railers and Thunder would go into a Worcester Hockey record of 12 rounds. Railers’ Frankie DiChiara and Thunder’s Terrance Wallin both found the net in the fourth round. Birthday Boy Mike Cornell put the game away with his goal in the 12th round.

The games three stars were Mike Cornell (GWG), Jeff Kubiak (1 Goal), and Mitch Gillam (28 saves, win). Railers are back to eight points back from a playoff spot held by the Wheeling Nailers and have 3 games in hand.

Railers will play against the Wheeling Nailers on Friday at home. Puck Drops at 7 PM.
