Game Story

Worcester, MA β€” The Worcester Railers shutout the Adirondack Thunder 1-0 in overtime on night two of Monkey Wrenches weekend.

Parker Gahagen stopped all 25 shots made by Adirondack to earn his second shutout of the season and his fourteenth win of the season. Jeremy Brodeur made 28 saves for the Thunder. Drew Callin scored the only goal of the game in overtime.

It was a great goaltending battle Sunday afternoon at the DCU Center with both Parker Gahagen and Jeremy Brodeur stopping all shots they faced in regulation. The Monkey Wrenches killed off five penalties, including a 5-on-3 during the second period. They had just one power play, which was an abbreviated one, after a 4-on-4. The Monkey Wrenches had the short end of the play calling stick early on In the first period, dealing with two of those penalties being called after Adirondack was guilty of the same infractions just moments earlier. Jesse Pulkkinen sat for a cross-checking call at 3:27 and Cam McDonald sat for a holding call at 14:03. Worcester outshot Adirondack 8-6 after twenty minutes.

The Railers signed AJ Schlepp earlier in the week and he made his debut on Sunday. During warm-ups he was pacing the red line at center ice, looking for a potential fight partner at some point in the game. He found his fight partner at 2:53 in the second period, when he forced veteran fighter Daniel Amesbury into dropping the mitts, he was eventually brought down after Schlepp missed a couple punches as the two moved from the corner of the Adirondack zone to center ice. Schlepp was given an additional two minutes for instigating on top of his fighting major. 1:18 after the fight, the game turned to 4-on-4 with Jeremy Hanzel heading off for a slash. Worcester would fail to make a shot on goal in their brief power play, then found themselves shorthanded with Khristian Acosta heading to the box for hooking and Anthony Repaci serving a bench minor for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Monkey Wrenches survived the penalty kill after four shots by the Thunder. Shots were 11-9 Worcester in the second period.

The game would head to overtime after the Thunder outshot the Monkey Wrenches 9-7 in the third period. Worcester had some great opportunities to score late in the third period, but found ways to miss as Brodeur struggled to get back into position.

Drew Callin broke the stalemate at 4:27 when he forced Brodeur out of his net and put it in the net on a backhanded shot for his 20th goal of the season. Head coach Nick Tuzzolino was given a game misconduct at the conclusion of the game after having some words for the officials, a rare occurrence for a winning coach to be given a penalty.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Drew Callin (Worcester) – game winning goal
  2. Parker Gahagen (Worcester) – win, 25 saves, shutout
  3. Jeremy Brodeur (Adirondack) – 28 saves, 0.966 SV%
