Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers hosted the Adirondack Thunder for the team’s last home game of January on Saturday night at the DCU Center.

All-Star Mitch Gillam started in net for Worcester. Evan Cormier was the starter for Adirondack before being replaced by Alex Sakellaropoulos after allowing his fourth goal of the game. Ryan Hitchcock (4th & 5th), Yanick Turcotte (1st), Barry Almeida (12th), and Woody Hudson (5th) scored for Worcester.

The boys in white started scoring and they didnt stop scoring in the first. Ryan Hitchcock got things started on a breakaway from center ice and shooting it in past Cormier at 44 seconds in the first. Yanick Turcotte would score his first of the season a little less than four minutes later, which was then followed by his seventh fight of the season against Alexandre Carrier. Things would continue to roll in the Railers favor at 5:31 with a goal by Barry Almeida and again at 8:54 with Woody Hudson’s fifth goal of the season. At this point, Adirondack’s head coach Alex Loh pulled Cormier and Woo Hockey Alum Alex Sakellaropoulos was put in net. Railers held a four point lead, outshooting the Thunder 12-9.

For the only notable action in the middle frame, John Edwardh scored for Adirondack at 9:59 in the second period with a man advantage as Mike Cornell sat in the box for a hooking minor.

Ryan Hitchcock scored his second of the night, slipping the puck between the post and goaltender Alex Sakellaropoulos at 11:25 in the third period. Railers had control of the puck for a majority of the remainder of the game, skating away with the second straight game this weekend.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. Ryan Hitchcock (Worcester) – 2 goals
  2. Yanick Turcotte (Worcester) – 1 goal, fight
  3. Dylan Willick (Worcester) – 2 assists

Worcester Railers (19-17-3-2) tie with Maine for sixth place in the North Division with 43 points.

The gang will travel to Manchester tomorrow to close out the weekend, taking on the Monarchs for an early afternoon game at the SNHU Arena at 3 PM.

Notes

  • Railers Injuries: Malcolm Gould, Kyle McKenzie, Tyler Mueller, and Alex Vanier
  • Railers Scratches: Bo Brauer, Tommy Kelley, Matt Schmalz
  • According to the ECHL transactions list this afternoon, Tyler Mueller has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to January 20 and Matt Schmalz was placed on reserve. Mueller is dealing with an upper-body injury from last weekend when he was checked in the head by Growlers’ Brady Ferguson. Schmalz was involved in a fight during Friday’s away game against Adirondack where he got beat up and likely needs a few days to recover.
  • Announced by Bridgeport at 3 PM today, Matt Gaudreau was loaned to Worcester prior to tonight’s game. The Sound Tigers are playing in their final game before the AHL All-Star break, so assigning Gaudreau to Worcester is a good move to give him some ice-time. The Railers could be loaned another player for tomorrow’s game if another player is released or added to injured reserve.
