Game Story

Worcester, MA – The Worcester Railers secured a 4-3 victory over the Adirondack Thunder, picking up the first win of three games at the DCU Center on Friday night.

Hugo Ollas picked up his second win as a Railer, stopping 29 saves. Jeremy Brodeur stopped 37 shots made by Worcester, he now has a 5-5-1 record against Worcester in his career. Riley Ginnell, Matt Kopperud, Mason Klee, and Matt DeMelis had the scoring tallies for Worcester. Ryan Conroy and Kevin O’Neil scored for Adirondack, O’Neil scored twice. The Railers are on a season-long six-game point streak (4-0-2). JD Dudek is on a three-game point streak (1-3-4).

Adirondack struck early, scoring on their first shot to get 1-0 lead just 1:28 into the game when Ryan Conroy scored on a rebound backhand shot past goaltender Hugo Ollas.. The Thunder carried the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Worcester evened the score 1-1 at 8:00 in the second period as Riley Ginnell netted his third goal of the season, capitalizing on a rush and beating goaltender Jeremy Brodeur. Mason Klee and Cam McDonald earned the assists.

Kevin O’Neil restored the Thunder’s lead at 10:17 of the second period on one-timer from the left circle that beat Ollas over the shoulder. O’Neil struck again on the power play at 11:28, firing a shot from the point through traffic for his second goal of the game, giving Adirondack a 3-1 advantage.

The game had a brief delay just after Kevin O’Neil’s first goal, as crews worked to secure glass on the right side of the Adirondack bench which had broke free. After the glass was secured with duct tape, play resumed.

The Railers wasted 30 seconds of a 5-on-3 power play after a delayed penalty, opting to pull Hugo Ollas for an extra attacker and playing six-on-four instead of turning the puck over at 5:50. Later in the period, Jeremy Brodeur’s stick broke at the handle, leading to confusion among fans and the Railers bench, who shouted for a penalty. However, goalies are allowed to use broken sticks during play, which Brodeur did, unlike skaters who are prohibited from doing so.

Worcester narrowed the gap late in the second period, as Matthew Kopperud scored his eighth goal of the season with 45 seconds remaining, assisted by JD Dudek and Anthony Callin, making it 3-2 heading into the third.

In the final period, Mason Klee tied the game at 12:32 with a power-play goal, followed by Matt DeMelis scoring just 29 seconds later to give Worcester a 4-3 lead, which they maintained to secure the victory.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Matt DeMelis (Worcester) – game-winning goal
  2. Mason Klee (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  3. Matt Kopperud (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist
