Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers came out on top in game two of their final three-in-three weekend of the regular season, edging out the Adirondack Thunder with a 3-2 victory on Saturday night.

Michael Bullion earned his 17th win of the season, making 23 saves for Worcester. Henry Welsch made his first career start against Worcester for the Thunder, who made 30 saves. Tyler Kobryn, Tanner Schachle, and Justin Gill each scored for Worcester. Ian Pierce and Kaleb Ergang scored for Adirondack.

Saturday continued the momentum of Friday night’s win in Glens Falls, a close game which Railers and Thunder fans have come to expect in their late season meetings. For the second straight game, Worcester got on the board in the opening minutes. With the Thunder turning over the puck, Justin Gill scored on a shot over the shoulder of Henry Welsch for the initial 1-0 lead at 2:38. The Railers held the Thunder to just one shot in the opening 13 minutes, with Worcester eventually outshooting the Thunder 12-5 in the opening period.

Worcester’s lead was doubled at 4:45 in the second period when Lincoln Hatten setup Tanner Schachle in front of the Thunder net for Schachle’s first of the season. The Thunder got on the board at 9:17 when Ian Pierce skated through center ice and went head to head with Michael Bullion where a wrist shot got past Bullion. The Thunder tied the game with ten seconds left in the period, when Griffin Luce, who was all alone in the Railers zone, botched a pass out of the zone resulting in a turnover that Kaleb Ergang took complete advantage of and scored on his own rebound. With the game tied, Adirondack gained some ground with shots being 13-8 in the second period.

The Railers regained their lead with a little over five minutes remaining in the third period. Tyler Kobryn got a breakaway after an Adirondack turnover after a puck battle at center ice.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. Tyler Kobryn (Worcester) – 1 goal
  2. Tanner Schachle (Worcester) – 1 goal, +1
  3. Justin Gill (Worcester) – 1 goal, +1

The Maine Mariners beat the Trois-Rivieres Lions 4-3 earlier in the night up in Portland. The Norfolk Admirals beat the Iowa Heartlanders in a thrilling 1-0 shutout win at the Xtream Arena. The Reading Royals beat the Wheeling Nailers in a close battle at the WesBanco Arena. The Railers magic number to clinch the final playoff spot in the North division is 8.

Up in the AHL, the Bridgeport Islanders dropped a 5-2 decision to the Charlotte Checkers. Tristan Lennox played the full 60 minutes in goal for Bridgeport, recording 24 saves, while former Railers netminder Ken Appleby earned the win with a 31-save performance for Charlotte. Daylan Kueffler was the only former Railer dressed among the Bridgeport skaters. Notably, the Islanders recently signed several college prospects to amateur tryout deals, but instead of giving them ice time, the organization has continued to scratch them—mirroring a trend of scratching players who could be making contributions to the one team in the Islanders affiliation tree fighting for a playoff spot.

The Railers and Thunder close out the weekend at the DCU Center at 3:05 p.m.
