Game Story

Portland, ME – The Worcester Railers closed out their Maine road trip with a 3-1 loss to the Maine Mariners with three unanswered goals at the Cross Insurance Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Gabriel Carriere made his Railers debut on Sunday with 33 saves. Max Lundgren made his pro debut for the Mariners, earning his first pro win with 31 saves. Matt DeMelis was the lone goal scorer for Worcester. Max Andreev, Josh Bloom, and Antonio Venuto scored for Maine.

Worcester had a better start in Sunday’s game compared to Saturday, but costly mistakes in special teams situations are still present in their play. Max Andreev managed to get his third shorthanded goal against the Railers this weekend. Railers are now 1-for-24 on the power play and have allowed four shorthanded goals.

Matt DeMelis opened up scoring at 10:30 in the first period, picking up a pass from Stevie Moses from the corner and flipped the puck over the shoulder of Max Lundgren on a backhanded shot to give Worcester a 1-0 lead. First period would have the first fights of the season with Tyson Fawcett taking down Wyllum Deveaux three minutes after DeMelis’ goal and Jordan Kaplan fighting Dylan MacKinnon at 15:46. Both fights were retaliation for hits on Cole Donhauser by Deveaux and Vinny Corcoran by Dylan MacKinnon. Railers led 1-0 with Maine outshooting 14-9 through twenty minutes.

Max Andreev scored his third shorthanded goal of the weekend at 11:41 in the second period. Andreev stole the puck from Michael Suda and rushed head-to-head with Gabriel Carriere to tie the game at 1. Maine scored again on the power play at 18:43 in the period while on a four-minute power play. An uncovered Josh Bloom scored on Gabriel Carriere at the crease to give Maine a 2-1 lead. Shots were 31-21 Maine after two periods, Worcester had just two shots on goal in the last ten minutes of the period.

Antonio Venuto extended Maine’s lead to 3-1 at 15:19 in the third period, tipping in a pass from Robert Cronin in front of the Railers’ net. Maine had some opportunities to make it 4-1 with Carrier pulled for the extra attacker with 1:22 left in the game, but failed on those chances. Shots were 36-32 Maine at the end of the game, Worcester outshot Maine 11-5 in the third period.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Max Lundgren (Maine) – win, 31 saves, 0.969 SV%
  2. Max Andreev (Maine) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  3. Antonio Venuto (Maine) – 1 goal, 1 assist
