Game Story

Worcester, MA – The Worcester Railers dropped night one of their Monkey Wrench weekend, falling 2-1 to the Maine Mariners on Saturday night.

Tristan Lennox picked up his tenth loss of the season, stopping 27 shots made by Maine. Brad Arvanitis earned his sixth straight win, stopping all but one of Worcester’s 26 shots. Maine has now won seven straight and eight of their last ten games. Anthony Repaci scored Worcester’s lone goal, while Jacob Hudson and Liam Gorman scored for the Mariners.

The Monkey Wrenches controlled possession through much of the opening five minutes. Kristian Acosta was called for holding at 6:45, and Maine generated three shots on goal during the power play. Worcester responded with a successful penalty kill, and Anthony Repaci opened the scoring at 9:28, beating Brad Arvanitis from the right side to give the Railers a 1-0 lead. The Railers managed just two more shots for the rest of the period but held a 12-10 edge in shots after twenty minutes.

Maine needed only its first two shots of the second period to turn the game around, a momentum swing that ultimately decided the contest. Jacob Hudson tied the game at 1:36, deflecting a shot from Nick Anderson just seconds after Max Andreev won an offensive-zone faceoff. One minute and ten seconds later, Liam Gorman capitalized on a rebound off the end boards from Ty Cheveldayoff to give Maine a 2-1 lead. Worcester went shotless on a power play midway through the period and successfully killed off two penalties before the intermission. Maine outshot the Railers 12-6 in the second.

The Monkey Wrenches were unable to convert on three third-period power plays, along with a stretch of four-on-four play. Early in the period, referee Alexandre Gagne was struck in the head by a puck and left the game after being assisted off the ice by both teams’ athletic trainers. With 3:38 remaining and on their fourth power play of the night, head coach Nick Tuzzolino pulled Tristan Lennox for the extra attacker after 1:10 of the advantage had passed. Maine sealed its seventh straight win 2:28 later, holding on for the 2-1 victory.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Brad Arvanitis (Maine) – win, 25 saves, 0.962 SV%
  2. Liam Gorman (Maine) – game winning goal
  3. Anthony Repaci (Worcester) – 1 goal
