Portland, ME – The Worcester Railers dropped the second game of the weekend, falling 3-2 to the Portland Pirates on Saturday night in overtime.

Parker Gahagen made 24 saves in his 13th appearance of the season for Worcester. Brad Arvanitis made 24 saves for Maine, who were wearing their Portland Pirates throwback jerseys for the second time this season. Jesse Pulkkinen and Drew Callin scored for Worcester. Andrew Nielsen, Mitch Deelstra, and Max Andreev were the goal scorers for Maine.

Maine had the early advantage when Lincoln Hatten took a high-sticking penalty 16 seconds into the first period. With seconds left on that power play, Andrew Nielsen scored on a rebound from Jacob Hudson for the early 1-0 lead. Maine would maintain that lead heading inot the first intermission, outshooting Worcester 11-5.

Maine’s lead would last just under 20 minutes when Jesse Pulkkinen found the back of the net with a shot from the blueline 33 seconds into the second period. The Pirates would regain that lead at 9:35 when Mitch Deelstra found the back of the net on an odd-man rush to make it 2-1. Maine would again outshoot Worcester 9-7 in the second period.

Railers would tie the gane at 8:28 while Maine’s Loke Johansson served a roughing call 48 seconds earlier. He scored on a rebound on the doorstop of Brad Arvanitis for his tenth goal of the season. His brother Anthony would score late in the period, but that would be overturned on a goaltender interference call after a video review. Worcester would outshoot Maine 13-4 in the period heading into overtime.

The overtime period would start 3-on-3 with both teams having penalties that carried over, and both would be killed off. Cole Donhauser fell while Maine was setting up their attack from behind their net, which led to a 3-on-2 rush into the Railers zone, Max Andreev put the game away after he connected on a pass from Jackson Edward, the puck going bardown behind the net for Gahagen. Worcester would not get a shot in the overtime period, while Maine had 3.

The three stars of the game were:

  2. Linus Hemstrom (Maine) – 2 assists
  3. Drew Callin (Worcester) – 1 goal

The Adirondack Thunder beat the Trois-Rivieres Lions 3-1 earlier in the night. The Greensboro Gargoyles beat the Reading Royals 4-1 on Reading. The Norfolk Admirals beat the Wheeling Nailers for the second straight night, 6-3. Adirondack and Trois-Rivieres meet for the only other divisional game on Sunday afternoon.

The Bridgeport Islanders beat the Springfield Thunderbirds 4-1 on Saturday night. It was all Railers alum involved in the action, as all three stars of the game spent some time here. Henrik Tikkanen was the game’s first star with 18 saves his his seventh win of the season. Cam Berg was the second star with the game-winning goal. Daylan Kuefler was named the third, he scored Bridgeport’s first goal.

The Mariners and Railers close out the weekend on Sunday afternoon as they head to Worcester for a 3:05 p.m. puck drop.
