Game Story

Portland, ME – The Worcester Railers kicked off a three-in-three weekend with a 3–2 shootout victory over the Maine Mariners on Friday night.

Tristan Lennox was stellar between the pipes for Worcester, turning aside 37 shots to earn his second win of the season and his first since November 14. Luke Cavallin stopped 22 shots for Maine. Anthony Callin scored twice in regulation for Worcester, striking once shorthanded and once on the power play, while Ryan Miotto delivered the game-winner in the shootout. Andrew Nielsen and Antonio Ventuto scored for Maine. This was just Worcester’s second shootout of the season, the other was a loss to Reading on Halloween.

Andrew Nielsen opened the scoring with a snipe from the right faceoff circle, finding the back of the net after hitting the crossbar and behind Tristan Lennox at 4:58 in the first period. Ryan Miotto found the back of the net at 18:03 in the period, tapping in a loose puck on the doorstop of Luke Cavallin. His goal went to review just as players were lining up for the next faceoff, a gift of a goaltender interference ruling pulled his goal off the scoresheet. Maine outshot Worcester 11-10 in the opening frame.

The second period remained scoreless despite a physical stretch that saw the teams combine for 26 penalty minutes. Maine again controlled the shot count, outshooting Worcester 9-7.

Worcester seized momentum early in the third period. Anthony Callin tied the game with a shorthanded goal at 3:38 while McAuley Carson served a high-sticking penalty, then struck again just three minutes later on the power play to give the Railers the lead. Maine responded late, as Antonio Ventuto scored with the extra attacker at 17:29, just 11 seconds after Cavallin was pulled. The third period was a tale of two halves: Worcester dominated the opening nine minutes without allowing a shot, while Maine controlled the final 11 minutes, holding Worcester shotless. Maine outshot Worcester 10-5 in the period.

The game remained tied through overtime, where Lennox was at his best. He stopped nine shots in the extra frame, many coming after Worcester was shorthanded due to a holding penalty to Lincoln Hatten. Lennox’s overtime performance stood out as one of his best in a Railers uniform.

In the shootout, Matt DeMelis and Brooklyn Kalmikov scored in the first round. Gleb Veremyev and Jacob Perrault were denied in the second. Ryan Miotto converted in the third round, and Lennox sealed the win by stopping Zach Jordan before he could get a shot off, securing the Railers’ 3–2 victory.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Tristan Lennox (Worcester) – win, 37 saves, 0.949 SV%
  2. Anthony Callin (Worcester) – 2 goals
  3. Andrew Nielsen (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist

The Trois-Rivieres Lions beat the Adirondack Thunder 3-1 earlier in the night. The Reading Royals shutout the Greensboro Gargoyles 6-0 at home. The Norfolk Admirals topped the Wheeling Nailers 2-1 at the Norfolk Scope. All eight North Division teams have rematches on Saturday night.

The Birdgeport Islanders beat the Lehigh Valley Phantoms 3-1 on Friday night. Railers alum Daylan Kuefler provided an assist, while Cam Berg was a +1. The Islanders host the Springfield Thunderbirds on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Railers return to Portland on Saturday night, where they’ll face the Pirates at 6 p.m.
