Game Story
Worcester, MA – The Worcester Railers were shut out 3-0 by the Norfolk Admirals on Saturday night at the DCU Center.
Thomas Gale made his second start of the season for Worcester, stopping all but one of the 24 shots he faced. Issac Poulter made his third straight start of the series, stopping all of the 22 shots Worcester made on Saturday night. It was just his second regular season shutout in the ECHL, the other was in a 7-0 win for the Adirondack Thunder against the Railers on December 23, 2022.. Chase Yoder, Jack Jaunich, and Kristof Papp.
Saturday was the annual Teddy Bear Toss game. The idea is that fans will toss Teddy Bears onto the ice after the home team scores their first goal, or if that never happens they’ll just end-up being thrown at the end of the game, the latter happened on Saturday night in Worcester when Kristoff Papp scored Norfolk’s second empty net goal with 22 seconds left in the game. The Railers were one of two ECHL teams who were shutout at home on the Teddy Bear Toss games. The bears donated will be given to Friendly House of Worcester.
Neither team scored in the first period as Norfolk outshot Worcester 7-6. It was 4-on-4 with around 3 minutes left in the period, when Anthony Callin was sent down to the ice by Norfolk’s Justin Young. The Railers should’ve been on a power play but referee Alex Berard sent both of them to the box.
Railers would kill off their only penalty kill 25 seconds into the second period with Max Dorrington heading to the box for a tripping call. The Railers would get a power play opportunity later in the period with Dawson Barteaux heading off for holding. Just over a minute into the penalty kill, Norfolk scored their third shorthanded goal of the series when Chase Yoder scored on a backhanded shot at 14:34. That would be all that Norfolk would need to secure the win, Worcester outshot Norfolk 10-8 in the second period.
Thomas Gale would be pulled for the extra attacker later in the third period. Jack Jaunich scored the first empty net goal at the 19:00 mark, Kristof Papp scored the second one 38 seconds later leading to fans throwing their Teddy Bears on the ice. Shots were 11-6 Norfolk in the third period, bringing totals to 26-22 Norfolk.
The three stars of the game were:
- Issac Poulter (Norfolk) – win, 22 saves, shutout
- Chase Yoder (Norfolk) – game-winning goal
- Thomas Gale (Worcester) – 23 saves, 0.958 SV%
The Maine Mariners were also shutout 3-0 earlier in the day by the Trois-Rivieres Lions. The Adirondack Thunder beat the Reading Royals 4-2. The Wheeling Nailers beat the Greensboro Gargoyles 3-2 in the shootout. The Adirondack Thunder host the Norfolk Admirals on Sunday for the last North Division matchup to be played before the holiday break.
The Railers head to Portland to face the Maine Mariners next Friday for scheduled 7:15 p.m. puck drop.
