Game Story

Worcester, MA – The Worcester Railers opened their three game series against the Norfolk Admirals with a 6-2 victory on Wednesday night.

Parker Gahagen earned his fifth win of the season with 31 saves. Issac Poulter made 28 saves in his sixth career appearance against the Railers. Riley Ginnell, Drew Callin, Anthony Repaci, Michael Suda, Matt Demelis and Gleb Veremyev each scored for Worcester. Jack O’Leary scored both of Norfolk’s goals. Matt DeMelis extended his point streak to four games with Worcester’s fifth goal. Anthony Callin. Drew Callin, Michael Suda, and Anthony Repaci each had multi point games.

The game was delayed several minutes at the 50 second mark in the first period as officials sorted a line-up discrepancy. No penalties were issued, nor were any players sent back to the locker room as play resumed. Though Max Dorrington was listed in the game sheet and in the Railers line-up, a quick scrub through the replay of the game it does not appear he took a single shift during the game.

Riley Ginnell broke scoring for Worcester at 5:39 in the first period, capitalizing on a 3-on-1, he skated into the zone and put the puck over the shoulder of Issac Poulter. Drew Callin scored on the power play, tipping in a shot from his brother, Anthony, at 10:11. Anthony Repaci scored on a one-timer setup from Anthony Callin just two minutes later. With two seconds left in the first period, Michael Suda scored with a snipe on Worcester’s second power play. The Railers led 4-0, outshooting the Admirals 16-12 in the opening frame.

Ross Mitton put the puck in the net at the 9:57 mark of the first period, but was waved off for goalie interference. Chase Yoder hooked Mitton on his way to the net, forcing Mitton to crash the net. While Mitton was down on the ice and still in the crease, he batted a loose puck past Poulter and Poulter was unable to make the play. Railers had a power play for that hook, and 14 seconds later the no-goal was moot when they scored again.

Jack O’Leary scored his first goal at 8:10 in the second period, then Matt DeMelis scored with 10 seconds left in the period with a shot off the left post for Worcester’s fifth goal. They had a 5-1 lead heading into the third period as Norfolk outshot them 17-8 in the period.

Jack O’Leary scored his second goal at 5:05 while Norfolk was shorthanded, then Gleb Veremyev scored Worcester’s sixth with 2.7 seconds left in the third period to secure a 6-2 victory. Shots were 10-4 Worcester in the third period.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Drew Callin (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  2. Michael Suda (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  3. Anthony Callin (Worcester) – 2 assists, +2

The Reading Royals beat the Adirondack Thunder 2-1 in overtime for the only other North Division game on Wednesday night. All eight North Division teams play on Friday night.

The Bridgeport Islanders were shutout 5-0 on Wednesday night by the Syracuse Crunch. Henrik Tikkanen had 24 saves for his first loss of the season with Bridgeport, snapping a four game personal winning streak since being recalled earlier this season. The Islanders head to Allentown, PA to face the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Friday night.

The Railers and Admirals continue the series on Friday with a puck drop of 7:05.
