Reading, PA — The Worcester Railers fell 5-4 to the Reading Royals despite a late rally on Saturday night.

Parker Gahagen made his third start of the season, making 24 saves on 28 shots. Gahagen was replaced with Thomas Gale to start the third period. Thomas Gale was credited with the loss after allowing what would end-up being the game winning goal. Yaniv Perets made 37 saves, picking up his second career win against Worcester in six appearances (2-2-0). Anthony (1-3-4) and Drew (1-4-5) Callin extended their point streaks to four games. Worcester’s goals were scored by Gleb Vermeyev, Matt DeMelis, Anthony Repaci and Lincoln Hatten. Massimo Rizzo, Jeremy Michel, Nolan Burke, Nick Capone, and Kyle Haskins scored for Reading.

Reading dominated for most of the first period , with Worcester slowly coming up to pace with the Royals. The Royals opened up scoring when Massimo Mizzo beat Gahagen after an up ice pass from Nolan Burke, sending the teddy bears flying at 4:09. They would score again at 15:45 when Jeremy Michel scored on a rebound from Artem Guryev. Gleb Vermeyev got Worcester on the board at 17:46 on the sixth shot of a power play to cut the game to 2-1. TJ Walsh would head to the box on a holding call at 18:52, then 32 seconds later Nolan Burke regained Reading’s two point advantage. Reading outshot Worcester 16-12 in the first period, the bulk of Worcester’s shots came while they had an extra skater.

Nick Capone extended Reading’s lead to 4-1 with the only goal of the second period. He deflected a shot from Robbie Stucker up front at 7:46. Reading once again outshot Worcester 12-9 in the period, bringing shot tallies to 28-21.

Thomas Gale was in net for the third period. Kyle Haskins brought the game to 5-1 with a goal at 2:54. Gale would be pulled for the extra attacker with 7:09 left in the third period, and the Railers would go on to score three goals to attempt a comeback. Matt DeMelis recovered a bouncing puck and scored on Perets at 12:41. Anthony Repaci scored at 16:52 with the puck bouncing through the pads of Perets. Lincoln Hatten tipped in a shot from Michael Suda at 17:30. Reading would use their timeout, and Worcester would struggle to setup for another play in the closing 2:30 of the period, falling 5-4. Worcester outshot Reading 20-7 in the third period, bringing shot totals to 41-35 Worcester.

The three stars of the game were:

  3. Anthony Repaci (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist

The Adirondack Thunder beat the Maine Mariners 2-1 in overtime earlier in the night. The Norfolk Admirals lost their seventh straight, falling 5-2 to the Florida Everblades. The Wheeling Nailers beat the Greensboro Gargoyles 3-1, completing a weekend sweep. Norfolk closes out the weekend with a rematch against Florida, Greensboro against Wheeling on Sunday.

Henrik Tikkanen made 18 saves in the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 6-2 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack on Saturday night. Daylan Kuefler had an assist and was +2 on the night. Bridgeport heads to Canada next weekend for games against Laval on Saturday and Belleville on Sunday.

The Railers continue their road trip on Wednesday, when they head to Glens Falls to face the Adirondack Thunder at 7 p.m.
