Game Story

Worcester, MA β€” The Worcester Railers topped the Greensboro Gargoyles 3-2 in overtime on Sunday afternoon, picking up their sixth win of the season.

Henrik Tikkanen earned his fifth win of the year, stopping 18 shots, while Ruslan Khazheyev turned aside 29 for Greensboro. Riley Piercey, Matt DeMelis, and Anthony Repaci found the back of the net for Worcester, with Colton Leiter and former Railer Wade Murphy scoring for the Gargoyles. Lincoln Hatten saw his six-game point streak come to an end, while DeMelis extended his own run to four games (2-3-5).

Worcester opened the scoring at 13:36 of the first period when Max Dorrington collected a loose puck at the Greensboro blue line and moved it up to Riley Piercey, who slipped a shot through the pads of Khazheyev for a 1-0 lead. The Railers carried that advantage into the intermission, outshooting the Gargoyles 11-4 in the opening frame.

Greensboro responded early in the second, tying the game at 4:32 as Colton Leiter beat Tikkanen over the glove while Michael Suda served a hooking penalty. Worcester reclaimed the lead at 11:04 when Khazheyev made the initial stop on a Matt Stief attempt but could not control the rebound, allowing Matt DeMelis to slide the puck home from the left side. The Railers went into the third period up 2-1 and held a 14-10 edge in shots for the period.

The Gargoyles evened the score again at 3:53 of the third when a turnover by Riley Ginnell led to a two-on-one rush. Ethan Leyh set up Wade Murphy, whose shot slipped five-hole on Tikkanen to make it 2-2. Both teams had six shots apiece in the third period.

In overtime, Worcester sealed the victory at 1:30 as Anthony Repaci finished a one-timer from Cole Donhauser, sneaking the puck between Khazheyev and the post to lock up the Railers’ second win of the weekend. Lincoln Hatten was assessed a 10-minute misconduct after the goal, exchanging some words with Ruslan Khazheyev at the bench.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Anthony Repaci (Worcester) – game-winning goal
  2. Matt DeMelis (Worcester) – 1 goal
  3. Wade Murphy (Greensboro) – 1 goal
