Game Story

Worcester, MA – The Worcester Railers fell in the opening game of their back-to-back series with the Greensboro Gargoyles, dropping a 4-2 decision on Saturday night.

Tristan Lennox started in goal for Worcester and turned aside 22 shots, while Nikita Quapp stopped 24 pucks in his ECHL debut for Greensboro. Lincoln Hatten and Anthony Repaci scored for the Railers, while Greensboro received goals from Ryan Richardson, Trevor Zins, Anthony Rinaldi, and Ethan Leyh. Former Railer Wade Murphy contributed two assists for Greensboro, and Lincoln Hatten extended his point streak to six games (5-3-8) with his goal. Worcester snapped a four-game win streak in the first meeting against Greensboro in franchise history.

Greensboro opened the scoring at 5:17 of the first period when Ryan Richardson ripped a shot from the left circle over Lennox’s shoulder while Lincoln Hatten was serving a tripping minor. Worcester answered late in the frame as Hatten redirected a Michael Suda attempt at 15:25 to knot the game at 1-1. The tie was short-lived, however, as Trevor Zins restored Greensboro’s lead three minutes later off a feed from Wade Murphy. The Gargoyles outshot Worcester 14-6 in the opening period.

The Gargoyles widened the gap to 3-1 at 10:50 of the second, as Anthony Rinaldi buried a rebound just three seconds after Anthony Hora stepped out of the penalty box. Worcester responded at 15:48 when Anthony Repaci finished a Drew Callin setup in front, trimming the deficit to one. Greensboro outshot Worcester 9-8 in the second period.

Despite controlling much of the play in the third period, Worcester was unable to find the equalizer. Lennox left the net for an extra attacker with 2:09 remaining, but after several unsuccessful shots from across the rink, Greensboro sealed the win with an empty-net goal with four seconds left on the game clock. The Railers outshot the Gargoyles 12-3 in the final period but came up short on the scoreboard.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Anthony Rinaldi (Greensboro) – 1 goal
  2. Nikita Quapp (Greensboro) – win, 24 saves, 0.923 SV%
  3. Anthony Repaci (Worcester) – 1 goal

The Trois-Rivieres Lions beat the Norfolk Admirals 6-1 earlier in the night on Saturday. Brannon McManus scored the shootout goal for the Adirondack Thunder, who beat the Indy Fuel 1-0. The Wheeling Nailers beat the Reading Royals 3-1, neither Jordan Kaplan nor Ryan Mahshie dressed for that game. Norfolk and Maine face-off at 3 p.m. for the only other North Division game on Sunday.

The Bridgeport Islanders fell 5-3 to the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday night. Calle Odelius, Daylan Kuefler, and Jesse Pulkkinen dressed for the game, Odelius and Pulkkinen each had a shot, Pulkkinen was a -3. Bridgeport is off until Friday when they host the Springfield Thunderbirds at 3 p.m.

The Railers and Gargoyles meet again at 3 p.m. at the DCU Center to close out the weekend.

Notes

  • Worcester Scratches: Cam McDonald, Kolby Johnson, Tanner Schachle, Porter Schachle, T.J. Walsh, and Thomas Gale.
  • Greensboro Scratches: Logan Nelson, Dawson McKinney, Noah Delmas, and Gabe Blanchard.
  • Riley Piercey made his return to the Railers line-up after missing seven games for a suspension. He is four games shy of hitting the 100-game milestone with the Railers.
  • Most readers know it’s rare that I wear jerseys to games these days. With Greensboro coming to town, I opted to wear a Carolina Monarchs jersey for the occasion, and word around the rink is that it could’ve played a factor in the Railers snapping a four-game win streak. I’ll take some of that blame, but two of Greensboro’s goals should’ve been stopped.
  • There are a couple of similarities between the Manchester Monarchs and the Greensboro Gargoyles – between the team logo and colors and Greensboro also being home to a team once called the Greensboro (Carolina) Monarchs. Wade Murphy played 16 games with Manchester during the 2016-17 season, the season before he joined Worcester.
  • Following Saturday night’s game, the Railers had the following scoring streaks and droughts:
    • Anthony Hora is without a point in his last four games.
    • Max Dorrington is without a point in his last five games.
    • Lincoln Hatten extended his point streak to six games with a goal. (5-3-8)
    • Adam Samuelsson is without a point in his last five games.
    • Ross Mitton is without a point in his last four games.
    • Riley Piercey is without a point in his last three games.
    • Jesse Nurmi is without a point in his last four games.
    • Matt DeMelis is on a three-game point streak. (1-3-4)
