Game Story

Worcester, MA – The Worcester Railers were swept by the Maine Mariners, falling 4-2 on Sunday afternoon to close out the three-game weekend series.

Holy Cross alum Thomas Gale made his season debut for Worcester, stopping 26 shots in a solid first outing. Luke Cavallin turned aside 22 shots for Maine to earn his sixth win of the year, and third against the Railers this season. The Mariners’ offense came from Jacob Perreault, Lynden McCallum (twice), and Sebastian Vidmar, while Drew Callin and Kolby Johnson scored for Worcester. The Railers are still searching for their first win at home after losing six at the DCU Center and have lost their last five games.

Though the Railers showed more life than in previous nights, turnovers and defensive miscues continued to cost them. Gale gave Worcester some much-needed stability between the pipes, offering Tristan Lennox and Henrik Tikkanen a breather, but the lack of sustained offense remained the biggest hurdle.

Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening frame. With Jesse Nurmi in the box for slashing, Jacob Perreault buried a one-timer just eight seconds into the ensuing power play at 1:58. Lynden McCallum doubled the lead with a laser under the crossbar at 17:17. A potential Worcester goal from Riley Ginnell was waved off for goaltender interference, marking the second straight night his tally was overturned. Shots were even 9-9 after one.

Worcester cut into the deficit early in the second when Drew Callin deflected a Ryan Miotto feed on the power play at 1:48. McCallum answered with his second of the night, another one-timer on the man advantage at 7:46. During the period, Maine forward Xander Lamppa exited the game after a collision with Miotto left him bloodied; he did not return. Maine outshot Worcester 17-7 in the frame.

Kolby Johnson pulled Worcester back within one midway through the third, burying a loose puck in front at 9:35 for his first of the season. Gale was pulled for the extra attacker with 2:38 remaining, but Sebastian Vidmar sealed the win for Maine with an empty-net goal 25 seconds later.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Lynden McCallum (Maine) – 2 goals
  2. Luke Cavallin (Maine) – win, 22 saves, 0.917 SV%
  3. Thomas Gale (Worcester) – 26 saves

All eight North Division clubs return to action on Friday.

The Railers host the Trois-Rivieres Lions for the first of back-to-back games on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
