Game Story
Portland, ME – The Worcester Railers were blanked 4-0 by the Maine Mariners on Friday night in the first of a three-game weekend set.
Tristan Lennox made a career-high 45 saves in his fourth appearance of the season, still seeking his first win of this season. His previous career best was 43 saves in a 4-2 victory over Cincinnati on November 18, 2023. Lennox has now dropped 13 straight starts between the ECHL and AHL levels, five with Bridgeport last season, and four (three in regulation, one in overtime) to close out his 2023-24 season with Worcester.
At the other end, Luke Cavallin turned aside 27 shots for his fourth win and second shutout of the year against Worcester—his first coming on opening night. Maine’s offense was led by Max Andreev, who recorded his third career hat trick and added an assist on Brooklin Kalmikov’s opening goal.
Worcester’s lineup featured several new faces. Forward Porter Schachle made his professional debut, while Riley Ginnell and Tanner Schachle each suited up for the first time this season. On defense, Michael Suda made his Railers debut after being acquired from Savannah earlier in the week. The team was without Anthony Callin and Riley Piercey, both beginning suspensions stemming from last Saturday’s game—Callin for four games and Piercey for seven.
Maine wasted no time getting on the board. After Porter Schachle was called for hooking just 34 seconds into the game, Kalmikov capitalized 24 seconds later, burying a rebound from Andreev to make it 1-0. Worcester was outshot 15-6 in the opening frame and managed just two shots on a pair of power plays midway through the period.
The score held until late in the second period, when Andreev deflected a point shot from Loke Johansson past Lennox with 17 seconds remaining to double the lead. The Mariners again dominated the shot column, 22-11, in the middle frame.
Andreev struck again early in the third, slipping a loose puck through Lennox’s pads at 1:40 to make it 3-0. Ryan Miotto dropped the gloves with Zachary Massicotte at 13:43 in the third period after Miotto laid a hit on Caiden Villegas for a quick fight. Worcester pulled Lennox for an extra attacker with 4:37 remaining, but a miscue between Cam McDonald and Matt DeMelis led to Andreev completing his hat trick with an empty-net goal to seal the 4-0 final.
The three stars of the game were:
- Max Andreev (Maine) – 3 goals, 1 assist, +2
- Brooklyn Kalmikov (Maine) – 1 goal, 3 assists, +2
- Luke Cavallin (Maine) – win, shutout, 27 saves
The Bridgeport Islanders cruised past the Springfield Thunderbirds 6-2 in front of a sold-out crowd in Springfield. Daylan Kueffler netted the game-winning goal, his first of the season, while former Boston Bruin Milan Lucic finished a -3 in his AHL debut for Springfield. Former Worcester Shark Riley Brace served as one of the referees for the contest. The teams will meet again Saturday night in Bridgeport at 7 p.m.
Elsewhere in the North Division, the Wheeling Nailers beat the Greensboro Gargoyles 3-2 in a shootout, with former Railer Ryan Mahshie scoring for Wheeling. The Norfolk Admirals downed the Adirondack Thunder 4-1 at home. All eight North Division clubs are in action again Saturday, with rematches across the board, while Trois-Rivières and Reading open their own two-game set.
The Railers and Mariners now shift to Worcester for the second leg of their 3-in-3 weekend, kicking off a pair of back-to-back matchups at the DCU Center beginning Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. Worcester will wear special lavender “Railers Fight Cancer” jerseys, which will be auctioned off to benefit Why Me & Sherry’s House.
