Game Story

Glens Falls, NY — The Worcester Railers kept their playoff push alive on Friday night, rallying with four unanswered goals to beat the Adirondack Thunder 5-4.

Goaltender Hugo Ollas earned his twelfth win of the season, ending a five-game skid with 20 saves. Adirondack’s Jeremy Brodeur turned aside 30 shots in the loss. Worcester goals came from Matt Kopperud, Matias Rajaniemi, Anthony Callin (twice), and Cole Donhauser. Scoring for the Thunder were Isaiah Fox, Dennis Busby, Grant Loven, and Dan Ebrahim.

Worcester opened the scoring early, with Matt Kopperud burying a rebound off a Jordan Kaplan shot at 2:03 of the first. Adirondack answered just over two minutes later as Isaiah Fox slipped a shot over Ollas’ shoulder on a feed from Greg Smith. Dennis Busby then gave the Thunder a 2-1 lead on a power play while Cole Donhauser was in the box for tripping. Grant Loven extended the lead to 3-1, deflecting in a shot from Lars Rodne at 14:33. The Railers responded less than a minute later, as Matias Rajaniemi fired one home at 15:24.

The first period also featured two fights. Ryan Mahshie dropped the gloves with Kishaun Gervais following a heavy hit on Brandon Less, while Pito Walton squared off with Isaiah Fox after a hip check on Ryan Conroy at center ice.

Worcester seized control in the second period, lighting the lamp three times to take a 5-3 lead. Anthony Callin tied the game with a shorthanded breakaway goal. At 13:27, Cole Donhauser netted the go-ahead goal, and Callin struck again with an unassisted tally in the final minute of the period. The Railers outshot the Thunder 18-6 in the frame.

The third period remained scoreless until the final minutes. Adirondack cut the deficit to one with 2:37 left when Dan Ebrahim scored with Brodeur pulled for the extra attacker. However, Worcester held strong in the closing moments to seal the 5-4 win. Shots in the third favored Adirondack 9-5, but the Railers led overall, 35-24.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. Anthony Callin (Worcester) – 2 goals, 1 assist, +2
  2. Matthew Kopperud (Worcester) – 1 goal, +2
  3. Isaiah Fox (Adirondack) – 1 goal
