Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers capped off a weekend sweep of the Trois-Rivières Lions with a 5-4 victory on Sunday afternoon at the DCU Center.

Goaltender Michael Bullion secured his fifteenth win of the season and extended his personal winning streak to five games, making 27 saves. Luke Cavallin started in net for the Lions, stopping 11 of 15 shots before being replaced by Hunter Jones, who turned away all six shots he faced. Worcester’s scoring came from Anthony Repaci, Anthony Callin, Lincoln Hatten, Connor Welsh, and Cole Donhauser. Logan Nijhoff and Tyler Hylland found the net for Trois-Rivières, with Nijhoff completing a hat trick by scoring in the final second of regulation.

Sunday’s game was tighter than it should have been, despite what the final score suggested. The Railers built a 4-0 lead, but the Lions nearly staged a late comeback reminiscent of Worcester’s own rally the night before.

Repaci opened the scoring at 7:52 of the first period, redirecting Callin’s shot past Cavallin. The Railers wasted no time extending their lead in the second, with Callin striking just 11 seconds in. Hatten and Welsh followed up with goals at 4:12 and 5:13, respectively, giving Worcester a dominant 4-0 advantage. The Lions responded with goals from Nijhoff and Hylland, trimming the deficit to 4-2 by the end of the period.

The third period remained quiet until Donhauser buried an empty-netter at 16:29 to make it 5-2. Trois-Rivières fought back, as Nijhoff struck twice in the final minutes, including a buzzer-beater, to complete his hat trick. Despite the late surge, the Railers held firm to secure the win, strengthening their playoff push while preventing the Lions from further cementing their top spot in the standings.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. Anthony Callin (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist, +3
  2. Anthony Repaci (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist, +1
  3. Michael Bullion (Worcester) – win, 27 saves, 0.871 SV%

In other North Division division matchups, the Maine Mariners defeated the Adirondack Thunder 5-3 in Portland, while the Reading Royals edged out the Norfolk Admirals 2-1 in Reading. The Adirondack Thunder, Reading Royals, and Norfolk Admirals are back in action on Wednesday, with all seven division teams playing on Friday. With both Worcester and Reading winning on Sunday, the Railers maintain a two-point lead over the Royals, though Reading holds two games in hand.

In the AHL, the Bridgeport Islanders suffered a 5-2 loss to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Sunday. Daylan Kuefler was the only former Railers skater to suit up. Goaltender Jakub Skarek was pulled after allowing four goals on eight shots in the first period, with Henrik Tikkanen stepping in to make 12 saves while allowing one goal. Former Worcester Shark Matt Nieto contributed a goal and an assist for the Baby Penguins. The Islanders will host the Hershey Bears on Wednesday before traveling to Rochester to take on the Americans on Friday.
