Game Story

Trois-Rivieres, QC – The Worcester Railers fell 3-1 to the Trois-Rivières Lions on Friday night, dropping the first of their three-game series.

Hugo Ollas made his eighth consecutive appearance and fifth straight start for Worcester, turning away 30 shots. At the other end, Luke Cavallin stopped all but one of Worcester’s 22 attempts, improving his career record against the Railers to 7-4-1. Cole Donhauser netted Worcester’s lone goal, while Brycen Martin, Anthony Beauregard, and Nicolas Guay found the back of the net for the Lions.

Worcester has struggled against Trois-Rivières this season, winning just two of their eight meetings (2-4-0-2), with both victories coming in overtime. With seven more matchups against the Lions this month, the Railers’ playoff hopes may hinge on these crucial games.

The Lions struck first at 4:50 of the opening period when Brycen Martin capitalized on a poorly timed Railers line change, taking a quick feed from Jakov Martin and beating Cam McDonald and Hugo Ollas from between the faceoff circles. Worcester struggled offensively, failing to register a shot in the final 10:18 of the first. The Lions outshot the Railers 13-5 in the frame.

The game’s first penalties came at 8:20 of the second period, with referee Chad Ingalls calling Matt Kopperud for slashing and an injured Israel Mianscum for embellishment. Mianscum had to be helped off the ice and did not return. Shortly after, at 9:11, Cole Donhauser deflected an Anthony Callin rebound to tie the game during 4-on-4 play. However, Worcester’s offensive struggles continued, as they went another 10:19 without a shot, leading to a 13-6 shot advantage for Trois-Rivières in the period.

The Lions reclaimed the lead just 12 seconds into the third when Anthony Beauregard beat Ollas glove-side. Nicolas Guay added insurance at 17:28, scoring on another glove-side shot to make it 3-1. The Railers had a late power play at 13:51 when Tommy Cormier was called for slashing, but Trois-Rivières managed the only shot during the two-minute advantage. Ollas was pulled in the final minutes, but the Railers couldn’t find an equalizer as the Lions secured the 3-1 victory.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. Anthony Beauregard (Trois-Rivieres) – 1 goal, +1
  2. Brycen Martin (Trois-Rivieres) – 1 goal, +1
  3. Nicolas Guay (Trois-Rivieres) – 1 goal, +1

The Wheeling Nailers edged out the Adirondack Thunder 1-0 in overtime earlier in the night in Glens Falls. Meanwhile, the Norfolk Admirals fell 5-3 to the Florida Everblades at Norfolk Scope. In Reading, the Maine Mariners secured a 2-1 overtime victory against the Royals. The game remained scoreless for the first 58 minutes before Reading broke the deadlock—only for Maine to respond 41 seconds later to force overtime. Christian Sarlo netted the game-winner for Maine at 3:19 of the extra frame. With Friday night’s results, Reading is now tied with Worcester at 58 points through 56 games.

On Wednesday night, the Bridgeport Islanders suffered a 6-3 loss to the Hartford Wolf Pack. Justin Gill recorded an assist on Bridgeport’s third goal, while goaltender Tristan Lennox split time with Hunter Miska, allowing three goals on 21 shots. Former Railers skaters Justin Gill and Jack Randl suited up for Bridgeport, while Blade Jenkins contributed an assist for Hartford. Bridgeport had Friday off but will host the Toronto Marlies on Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Railers and Lions will face off again on Saturday afternoon, with puck drop set for 3 p.m.
