Game Story

Allen, TX — The Worcester Railers picked up two big points over the Allen Americans on Saturday night after forcing overtime with two goals in the closing ten minutes of the game, before Connor Welsh sealed the game with a goal in the third round of the shootout.

Michael Bullion earned his tenth win of the season in his 24th appearance for the Railers. Dylan Wells was the starter for Allen, both goaltenders had 32 saves. Tyler Kobryn, Ryan Dickinson, and Jordan Kaplan scored for Worcester. Kamerin Nault scored twice for Allen in the first period, Brayden Guy scored their third goal four minutes into the second period.

Allen jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period as the Railers struggled to find their footing. Both goals were scored by Kamerin Nault. His first came at 6:22 when he capitalized on a rebound from Hudson Wilson’s shot. The puck deflected off Michael Bullion’s pads, then the left post, landing perfectly for Nault to fire it between Bullion’s pads and the post. Nault struck again at 17:58 on an odd-man rush, sending a shot off the crossbar and into the net. Allen outshot Worcester 14-7 in the first period.

The Railers got on the board at 2:01 in the second period. Tyler Kobryn sniped a loose puck from atop the right circle to bring the Railers to within one for his first as a Railer. Railers would go shorthanded 49 seconds later with Anthony Callin going off for a double minor for high-sticking. Allen would convert in the first half of that penalty with Brayden Guy deflecting a shot from J.C. Brassard at 4:11. The teams went scoreless for the remainder of the second, with shots favoring Worcester 14-11.

Michael Bullion faced a number of equipment issues throughout the game, including needing his helmet adjusted and dealing with a snapped string in one of his pads. A pivotal moment occurred at 12:46 of the third period when it was noticed that his stick was missing tape on the knob, which a requirement under ECHL rules. Head Coach, GM, and part-time equipment manager Nick Tuzzolino quickly taped it up, allowing play to resume. A minute and 25 seconds later, Ryan Dickinson scored on a wrist shot, cutting the deficit to one. With Bullion pulled for an extra attacker, Jordan Kaplan followed up on an Anthony Callin rebound to tie the game with 1:20 remaining in regulation. The game headed to overtime tied 3-3, with Worcester outshooting Allen 11-6 in the third and holding a 32-31 edge in regulation shots.

After a scoreless overtime that saw Allen outshoot Worcester 4-3, the game moved to a shootout. It came down to the final shooter after the first five attempts were denied. Worcester defenseman Connor Welsh sealed the 4-3 victory by slipping the puck through Wells’ five-hole. Shots were nearly even throughout, with Worcester narrowly leading 36-35 overall.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. Connor Welsh – (Worcester) – shootout goal, 1 assist
  2. Karmerin Nault – (Allen) – 2 goals
  3. Jordan Kaplan – (Worcester) – 1 goal
