Worcester, MA – The Worcester Railers improved to a .500 point percentage on Wednesday night with a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Gladiators at the DCU Center. It was the first match of three between the two teams this week.

Hugo Ollas earned his fourth win as a Railer, improving to a 4-1-1-1 record with the team, and 6-8-1-2 overall this season. Ollas stopped 21 shots made by Atlanta. Ethan Haider made 31 saves for Atlanta. Anthony Callin, Matt DeMelis, and Connor Welsh scored for Worcester. Blake Murray and Connor Galloway had the tallies for Atlanta.

The Railers took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Anthony Repaci, positioned between the circles, made a diving play to nudge the puck with the shaft of his stick to Anthony Hora at the left point. Hora fired a wrist shot on net, which Callin redirected past Haider at 17:06. Worcester outshot Atlanta 9-8 in the opening frame.

Blake Murray evened the score at 8:21 of the second period, capitalizing on a 3-on-2 rush. He received a pass from Easton Armstrong and fired a shot from the slot that skipped over Ollas’ pads. Both teams had their only power plays in the first period, with Dylan Carabia serving a cross-checking minor at 4:55 and Mark Cheremeta sitting for a double-minor for high-sticking at 17:42. Late in the period, Matt Ustaski had a prime shorthanded breakaway opportunity at 19:17, but Haider turned him aside. The game remained tied after two periods, with Worcester leading 23-16 in shots.

The Railers regained the lead at 3:19 of the third when Matt DeMelis drew Haider out of position and wrapped the puck around the other side of the net for his third goal of the season. Just 90 seconds later, Connor Welsh buried a loose puck from the left circle to extend Worcester’s lead to 3-1. Atlanta responded with another 3-on-2 rush, with Connor Galloway capitalizing on a rebound that Ollas was unable to cover up. Neither team would get another shot on goal in the final 10:13, with the Railers picking up their third straight win.

The three stars of the game were:

  2. Connor Welsh (Worcester) – 1 goal
  3. Anthony Repaci (Worcester) – 1 assist

This was the lone North Division game on Wednesday night. Six of the seven North Division teams play on Friday night, four of those games are against teams outside of the division.

Railers and Gladiators meet for game two of the three-game series on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
