Jaromir Jagr Passes Mark Messier for Second on Points List

Jaromir Jagr broke a tie with Mark Messier for second on the NHL career points list on Thursday night. Jagr scored his 1,888th NHL point while playing in his 1,663rd game, 93 fewer than Messier did in his career.

Cunningham Released from Hospital

As we talked about a few weeks ago, Craig Cunningham suffered a medical emergency on the ice and made headlines around the hockey community. News came out this week that he had suffered a heart attack that night. A month later, Cunningham has made a ton of progress and has been discharged from the hospital this week. Tuscon.com has written a great story about Craig’s progress and the long road ahead of him.

Irwin Doing Well with Nashville Predators

After a short stint with the Boston Bruins and then the Providence Bruins, Matt Irwin has received another chance in the NHL and is getting the most of it. In the past month, he’s been averaging close to 20 minutes of playing time per game and was recently promoted to top defensive pairing for the Nashville Predators. He ranks fifth in blocked shots (43), first in hits (64), and leads Nashville with the highest plus/minus rating with +12.

Kennedy Waived, Claimed, and Loaned Back

Forward Tim Kennedy has returned to the United States after playing the last season and a half in the KHL and SHL. Kennedy was released from his contract with Luleå HF (SHL) last week with the intention of returning to the states to continue his hockey career. He was signed to a minor league deal with the Rochester Americans (AHL) on December 19 and was placed on waivers to be eligible to play. The Carolina Hurricanes (NHL) claimed Kennedy on waivers and was then loaned back to the Rochester Americans.

Fred Cassivi Signed as Emergency Backup for Reading Royals

Former Worcester IceCats goaltender Fred Casssivi was signed as an emergency backup goalie for the Reading Royals (ECHL) on Friday. Cassivi ended his professional career in Austria, appearing in 51 games with the Vienna Capitals of the Austrian Hockey League during the 2009–10 season. He served as an emergency backup and played for the Reading Royals during the 2012-13 season.

Gus Young was traded to the San Antonio Rampage (AHL) from the Chicago Wolves (AHL) on December 18, 2016.

Taylor Fedun was reassigned to the Rochester Americans (AHL) from the Buffalo Sabres (NHL) on December 18, 2016.

Tim Kennedy was claimed off waivers by Carolina Hurricanes (NHL) after signing with Rochester Americans (AHL) on December 18. Kennedy was then loaned back to the Rochester Americans on the same day.

Ryan Vesce joined HC Lugano (Spengler Cup) on December 22, 2016.

James Sheppard was named to Hockey Canada’s Spengler Cup team on December 22, 2016.

Fred Cassivi was signed as emergency backup by the Reading Royals (ECHL) on December 23, 2016.
